emmy woods joins LOUD WOMEN’s Cyn Cheng for a chat ahead of LOUD WOMEN Fest Newport, and there’s a lot to love here about the music community she comes from.

Based in St Paul/Minneapolis, emmy talks about the scene around her and the particular kind of community that has grown up between artists there. It’s a place where musicians support each other, turn up for each other and create opportunities together, rather than treating every other act as competition. Frankly, we like the sound of that.

Cyn and emmy also get into songwriting, finding confidence as an artist and the music that has grown out of that community. emmy describes her sound as “bluesy ethereal folk”, drawing on country, folk and blues and a serious love of storytelling.

Her latest album, when the day breaks, was written while processing the loss of a loved one to the opioid crisis. It moves through grief, anger, love and spiritual reckoning, with emmy describing putting the record into the world as its own small act of defiance.

Now we get to bring a little bit of that St Paul/Minneapolis spirit to Newport.
