Public Servants Begin Three-Day Warning Strike Friday

  • JNPSNC directs federal, state and local government workers to join strike

  • Workers demand lower petrol prices, wage awards and new minimum wage talks

  • Industrial action scheduled from October 2 to October 4, 2026

Public servants across the federal, state and local government levels are set to begin a three-day nationwide warning strike from Friday, October 2, 2026, following the failure to resolve demands presented by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC).

The council directed its members to withdraw their services from midnight on Friday until Sunday, October 4, according to a circular dated October 1 and signed by its National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga.

The JNPSNC said the decision followed the Federal Government’s failure to respond satisfactorily to requests contained in a September 21 letter to President Bola Tinubu.

Among the workers’ demands are a reduction and stabilisation of petrol prices at N500 per litre, payment of wage awards to public servants, improved salaries and allowances, and the immediate commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had previously warned that the strike would commence if the government failed to address the issues by September 30.

With the deadline having passed, the council activated the planned industrial action and called on public servants across the three tiers of government to participate.

The JNPSNC cited worsening economic conditions and the pressure on workers, their families and other vulnerable Nigerians as reasons for the action.

It also directed its national and state structures to mobilise workers and ensure compliance with the strike directive.

The warning strike is expected to run from midnight on Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 4, 2026.
