Award-winning winemaker Warren Randall has splashed $11m on a grand Arts and Crafts-designed home in St Georges, setting a whopping new price record for the leafy inner-eastern suburb.
Pilgrim RE selling agent Brett Pilgrim confirmed Mr Randall, the executive chairman and proprietor of Seppeltsfield Wines, was the successful buyer of 15 Wootoona Terrace, which sold last Thursday.

In an ironic, near full circle moment, Mr Pilgrim subsequently almost sold Mr Randall’s home to the Wootoona Terrace vendors, who are now looking off-market for their next home.
“It was nearly the perfect story,” Mr Pilgrim said.
“I nearly sold them (the vendors) the buyer’s house. It didn’t quite come together but it was close – that would have been a very good story.”
Mr Randall will move into the 1919-built home, which boasts a distinctive castle-like tower, with his wife and two young children, Mr Pilgrim said.
The sale included an adjoining block at 33 Purnana Ave, where Mr Randall is expected to build a showroom to house his extensive car collection.

The property has all the hallmarks of a landmark SA property.
Mr Pilgrim said the 1086sqm block, which had an old guesthouse that the vendors had initially planned to stay in while searching for a new home, had been key to the record-breaking sale.
“(Mr Randall) loves the heritage-style home and he loves all the character and the gardens (of 15 Wootoona Tce) and his wife absolutely loved that too,” he said.
“But the other thing he loved – and what got him over the line – was the ability to buy that knockdown next door (at Purnana Ave).
“He has a big car collection so there’s going to be a very nice cellar and car garages on that block.
“It’s quite exciting for them.”

Mr Pilgrim estimated the Purnana Ave block had a market value of about $2m.
Even accounting for that, the main five-bedroom home, set on 3659sqm, easily smashed the previous property benchmark for St Georges, which was set last year with the sale of 3 Wootoona Tce for $5.5m, property records show.
Wootoona Tce is one of the most sought-after addresses in Australia, with homes for sale on the affluent street attracting 12,200 average views per listing, according to realestate.com.au.
No. 15 has only changed hands once before, with its vendors having lived there for the past 26 years.

Affectionately known as Castlemaine, the residence was designed by William & Good and built for The South Australian Register editor Sir William Sowden.
It stands as one of the state’s grandest examples of the Arts and Crafts movement, crowned by a distinctive crenellated tower and private observation deck that offers 360-degree views across the city.
While eye watering, the property purchase still falls short of South Australia’s house price record of $15.5m, achieved just five months ago with the sale of a six-bedroom mansion at 11 The Ave, Medindie.
