Rally and driving games used to be my go-to genre, but over the years I’ve watched many classic franchises get dragged through unnecessary remakes, reboots, and sequels that seem more focused on broad accessibility than preserving what made the originals great. Too often, the challenge gets toned down, the gameplay is simplified, and various gimmicks are added that simply don’t belong in a driving game. So when VIJUDA announced Super Woden Rally Edge a while back, it’s safe to say I was excited.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw the screenshots on the developer’s X profile was the PlayStation classic Circuit Breakers (later remade as Circuit Blasters for the PlayStation 2 in 2005). However, the more I saw of the game, the more it reminded me of WRC Powerslide. That’s certainly not a bad thing either even though Super Woden Rally Edge does not have power-ups or the like…
Functional Presentation, Retroesque Style, That Works Great…
By now, the Super Woden series has established itself as a pretty solid franchise with four games under its belt and another currently in development. Rally Edge is the first rally-focused entry in the series, and it manages to carve out its own identity while staying true to the formula fans have come to expect.
The game uses an isometric viewpoint, with several camera variations available. For the most part, these only alter the height rather than the angle, but they provide enough flexibility to find a perspective that suits your driving style.
Like the previous Super Woden titles, the game features a fairly traditional progression system. You’ll be changing oil, washing cars, upgrading vehicles, selling old rides, and purchasing new ones as you advance through the various classes. These classes essentially function as the game’s difficulty tiers, and each one requires vehicles that meet specific performance requirements.
The only downside to this structure is the amount of grinding involved. New cars and upgrades are expensive, and while the game occasionally rewards you with free vehicles for completing cups and events, they’re rarely top-tier machines. More often than not, you’ll find yourself spending heavily on upgrades or saving up for something better.
Free Cars, Location, Location and Location…
Graphically, Super Woden Rally Edge is very much an indie production, but that’s not a criticism. The visuals, sound design, and presentation all do their job well. The CRT-style filter can make things appear slightly blurry at times, but the game more than makes up for it with its blistering performance and incredibly responsive controls. Given the great difficulty level, any noticeable input lag would have ruined the experience, but thankfully that’s never an issue here.
As for content, the game covers all the expected rally terrain. Rain, snow, sand, forests, tarmac, and more are all represented, and the track design is consistently strong. Success requires careful use of both the handbrake and the ideal racing line, and the game does a good job of keeping things fresh. Alongside the standard rally events, you’ll also encounter head-to-head races against surprisingly tough AI opponents, as well as the occasional Gymkhana challenge. Normally I’m not a fan of Gymkhana events, but they work surprisingly well here.
There’s also couch multiplayer, an arcade mode, online leaderboards, and plenty of content to keep players coming back. The replay value is enormous, and even the trophy list feels thoughtfully designed rather than being an afterthought.
Racing Leaderboards Or A.I., Who Cares, GO GO GO…
A quick glance at the online leaderboards is usually enough to remind you just how much you suck at the game. Some of the players at the top have clearly put in a serious amount of practice. Maybe they’re simply that good, maybe they’ve found the perfect car setup, or perhaps they’re driving a machine far beyond what I’m using. Either way, it’s great to see the leaderboards populated with so many players, as it gives a good indication that the game has found a healthy audience.
Simply finishing races isn’t always that difficult, though it depends heavily on the track and vehicle class. Climbing the leaderboards, however, is a completely different story. That requires genuine skill, precision, and a deep understanding of the game’s mechanics. I was honestly surprised by some of the lap times posted by the top-ranked players, as they’re substantially faster than anything I could achieve.
It’s also worth remembering that Super Woden Rally Edge is an arcade racer, not a hardcore simulation. The game embraces a retro-inspired design philosophy, focusing on accessibility, fast-paced action, and enjoyable handling rather than realism. As an old-school arcade racer, it succeeds remarkably well and delivers exactly the kind of experience it sets out to offer.
WOOOHOOO PHYSICAL EDITION!!!…
Super Woden Rally Edge is also getting a physical release, courtesy of Funbox Media, which was honestly the last company I expected to be handling it. The best part, however, is that the package includes the first two Super Woden games as bonus titles. That’s three genuinely excellent games in a single package, making it a very appealing release for collectors and fans alike.
Another major advantage is that these games actually feel finished. In an era where many physical releases rely on day-one patches or endless post-launch updates, Super Woden Rally Edge appears to be a complete experience right out of the box. That makes this one of those increasingly rare physical PlayStation 5 releases that is actually worth owning, rather than becoming a glorified coaster once servers disappear or updates stop being available years down the line.
For retro racing fans, physical media enthusiasts, and collectors alike, this is an easy recommendation.
Now, if only VIJUDA would finally listen to my constant requests for a PS VR2 version…

If you’re a fan of arcade rally games, this is an easy recommendation. Don’t wait for a sale. Super Woden Rally Edge delivers exactly what it promises: fast, challenging, and rewarding rally action packed with content and backed by an old-school spirit that many modern driving games seem to have forgotten.
Even if arcade racers aren’t normally your thing, the upcoming physical edition may still be worth considering. Physical releases of quality niche titles often become increasingly sought after over time, and with three excellent games included in the package, this one has all the ingredients of a future collector’s item.
More importantly, it’s a chance to support developers who are committed to making games the way many of us remember them: focused on gameplay, challenge, and fun rather than chasing the latest trends. In a gaming industry that often seems determined to forget its roots, projects like Super Woden Rally Edge deserve recognition and support.
