I know that as this post is going to be released, St Patrick’s Day is behind us. And for some reason that makes me sad because it feels like everybody sort of forgets the happiness of a good pint and some Irish Trad Music.
There’s something oddly comforting about it for some reason. Beyond the small amounts that most Americans have seen, there is an almost relaxing sort of inviting culture. It’s amazing that the common consensus seems to be that all of Ireland is stereotypically centered around beer, especially a certain beer.
Why would anyone question this? The beer is good, the fun is good, and you’re going to find that fun anywhere you go.
Including Ft. Myers. I bring that up after having a pint of The Rowdy Stout (Dry Stout, 4.3% ABV).
It’s brewed at Point Ybel Brewing, just outside Sanibel and Captiva. But it’s also a wonderful collaboration with The Rowdy Bards, a 5 piece Ft. Myers-based Irish band.
And a solid group. I’m listening to Ghosts in the Barroom right now as a dictate this post.
I kind of can’t wait to see them live, and Point Ybel looks to be a great placer to find them, and their beer.
Just by looking at the label, just by understanding what it is, you will probably have a picture in your head what this is beer going to be like.
And you’re correct. This is the utterly enjoyable combination of dark and roasted malts, with an aroma that hearkens back to darker breads with the slightest candy twinge.
The flavor has a strong malty current lightly accented with prune, current, and plum. It’s got a little bit of a earthy bite, but I would be hesitant to call it hoppiness. It’s an almost soda-like mouthfeel experience that dances on the tongue and brings those fruity flavors in on a wave of Gaelic-style goodness.
It’s comforting, it’s inviting, and it’s a beautiful beer. As for The Rowdy Bards, I cannot wait to see them live. I will have to check them out online, and if I’m there soon, I’ll definitely raise a pint.
