A Vegan Sourdough Jack as good if not better than the original! I should know as I’ve eaten no less than 1000 of these!

Next to Carl’s Jr. and Del Taco, Jack in the Box was one of my favorite fast food places. It was cheap, they were open late and they catered to dirtbags like me. I ordered this burger all the time! So of course I had to make a Vegan Sourdough Jack to relive my old not so glory days!
If you’re unfamiliar, the Sourdough Jack is one of the old school, underrated burgers at Jack in the Box. It’s pretty simple, just comprised of a cheeseburger with bacon, tomato and ketchup and mayo. The sourdough bread however makes it a bit different and unique!
why you’ll dig a vegan sourdough jack
If you used to eat these, or if you just like the idea of a burger on sourdough bread, then you’ll totally love this! Like I said, it’s a fairly simple burger. If you don’t like ketchup, you can do like I did, and add some Vegan Ranch instead. Or heck, BBQ Sauce would be great too!

ingredients for a vegan sourdough jack
Sourdough Bread – I’d say the hardest thing to nail on this sandwich is the bread that Jack in the Box uses. It isn’t something you can really find in a store. It’s a round piece of really soft sourdough.
The texture is less reminiscent of a typical sourdough and more like a commercially made burger bun. That said, you can totally use a regular piece of sourdough if you like and it’ll still be great!

For something a bit more like the OG, you can also take 2 heels of a burger bun and flip them so the inside is on the outside and grill those. It’ll be softer, but won’t taste like sourdough unfortunately. I did something similar for my take on the Five Guys Patty Melt.

My friend Mike at Bold Flavor Vegan was kind enough to send me these round sourdough slices from Seattle. Totally not necessary, but honestly, just use whatever you have at your disposal!

Bacon – I used my Rice Paper Bacon for this, but use whatever vegan bacon you like!

Meat & Cheese – Use whatever vegan meat you like, Impossible or Beyond or similar. You can also make a Vegan Burger Patty from scratch! For the cheese, just use whatever you favorite vegan cheese is. Follow Your Heart Provolone slices work great!
Tomatoes, Mayo & Ketchup – I know tomatoes might seem like a weird thing to add here, but I swear they work! You can get rid of them though if you really hate tomatoes on a burger.

Same goes with the ketchup, I like it, but if you don’t, ace it and use whatever else you like. I do dig the Vegan Mayo on it though!
how to make a vegan sourdough jack
This couldn’t be easier! Butter and grill your bread / buns.

Then grill up your burger patty, and melt some cheese on it.

I like to add some water to the pan and then cover to steam and melt the cheese.

Then you just gotta assemble the burger like the photo! Easy as pie!

The 2 Tacos for 99¢ are a classic late night treat that you will always enjoy and regret!

You can also recreate the 99¢ Chick’n Sandwich fairly easily! Just make some Tofu Fried Chick’n or Seitan Fried Chick’n, serve it on a bun with some lettuce and Vegan Mayo!

To make a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, just make a smaller cheeseburger and use some Rice Paper Bacon and BBQ Sauce!

Sourdough Jack
- 2 bottom burger buns or 2 slices sourdough bread
- 4 – 5 oz plant based meat
- 2 – 4 slices Cooked Vegan Bacon
- 2 Tomato slices
- 1 slice vegan cheese
- 1 – 2 Tbsp Vegan Mayo
- 2 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 – 2 Tbsp Vegan butter
-
If using buns, with a serrated or bread knife, carefully shave off the bottom part of the heels, so you expose the interior of the bun.
-
Spread some vegan butter or mayo on your buns and toast until golden brown in a pan over medium heat (ideally let them rest on a wire rack so they don’t get soggy).
-
Form a burger patty, and add it to the pan. Cook for 3 minutes per side. When you flip it, add your vegan cheese then a few sprinkles of water to the pan, and cover to melt. Cook for 1 – 2 minutes.
-
Slather on some vegan mayo and ketchup on your top bun, season the tomaotes, then assemble burger as shown.
-
ENJOY!
