Smoked Sweet Potatos – Simply Meat Smoking

Sharing is caring!

Sweet potatoes are naturally delicious, but smoking them takes them to another level. The smoke adds depth while the natural sugars caramelize, creating tender flesh and crispy skin.

These smoked sweet potatoes are perfect for holiday dinners, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, but they’re also ideal for regular weeknight meals when you want something special alongside your main dish.

Easy Smoked Sweet Potatoes

These smoked sweet potatoes are incredibly easy to make and require minimal preparation. Simply season them with basic spices, place them in the smoker, and let the heat do the work. The result is perfectly cooked potatoes with smoky flavor throughout and a slightly crispy exterior that gives way to creamy, flavorful flesh inside.

The beauty of this recipe is its versatility. You can keep the toppings simple with just butter and salt, or load them up with bacon, cheese, green onions, and sour cream for a heartier side dish. Either way, these smoky sweet potatoes will quickly become a favorite that everyone asks you to make again and again.

What You’ll Need to Cook

  • Sweet Potatoes: Look for ones that are similar in size so they cook evenly.
  • Olive Oil
  • Kosher Salt
  • Smoked Paprika
  • Garlic Powder

Ingredient Substitutes

Potatoes: Regular russet potatoes work well but won’t have the same natural sweetness. Yams are an excellent substitute and will give similar results with slightly different flavor notes.

Olive Oil: Avocado oil or melted butter both work great. Avocado oil has a higher smoke point, while butter adds richness but may brown more quickly.

How to Smoke Sweet Potatoes

Step 1: Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

Scrub each sweet potato thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat them completely dry with paper towels. Use a fork to pierce each potato 8-10 times all over, which prevents them from bursting during cooking and allows smoke to penetrate deeper into the flesh.

Step 2: Season the Potatoes

Rub each potato with olive oil, ensuring the entire surface is coated. This helps the seasonings stick and promotes even browning. Mix the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika in a small bowl. Then, sprinkle the mixture evenly over each potato and rub it in with your hands.

Step 3: Smoke

Place the seasoned potatoes directly on the smoker grates, leaving space between each one for proper air circulation. Close the lid and maintain a temperature of 225°F throughout the cooking process. The potatoes will need 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on their size.

Step 4: Check for Doneness and Serve

After 1.5 hours, gently squeeze each potato with tongs. They should give slightly when pressed and feel tender throughout. If they’re still firm, continue smoking for another 15-30 minutes and check again.

Remove the potatoes from the smoker and let them rest for 5 minutes. Cut them open lengthwise, fluff the flesh with a fork, and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

How To Store Leftovers and Reheat

Let cooked sweet potatoes cool completely before storing. Wrap each individually in aluminum foil or place them in airtight containers. They’ll keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, unwrap and microwave for 1-2 minutes until heated through, or place back in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes. For best results, reheat in the smoker at 225°F for 20-30 minutes to restore that crispy skin.

My Favorite Wood Chips for Sweet Potatoes

Apple wood is my top choice for sweet potatoes because it adds a mild, sweet smokiness that complements the natural sugars without overpowering them, while creating a beautiful golden color on the skin.

Cherry wood offers a slightly stronger fruit flavor, complemented by a gorgeous reddish tint to the skin, and pairs wonderfully with the sweet potato’s natural earthiness.

For those who prefer a more robust smoke flavor, hickory adds a bacon-like smokiness that works especially well if you’re planning to top it with savory ingredients. Pecan wood offers a milder, nutty flavor that complements the sweet potato’s natural taste without overpowering it, making it perfect for those new to smoking vegetables.
