Ingredients you need for Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Wings

Chicken Wings – Fresh wings work best, but frozen wings can also be used. If using frozen wings, thaw them completely and pat them dry before seasoning.

Fresh Parmesan – Freshly grated Parmesan melts much better than the pre-shredded variety and provides a richer flavor.

Fresh Garlic – Fresh garlic creates an aromatic buttery sauce that’s impossible to replicate with garlic powder alone.

Black pepper – A little amount of freshly cracked black pepper will add to the flavor.

Corn Flour or Baking Powder – This is the secret ingredient for crispy skin. It changes the pH level of the chicken skin, allowing it to brown and crisp beautifully.

Spices for the wings – Garlic Powder and Smoked paprika along with salt.

Cilantro Leaves – Finely chopped cilantro leaves at the end to garnish and refreshing flavor. This is however optional.

What Makes Air Fryer Wings So Crispy?

The circulating hot air cooks the wings evenly while rendering the fat beneath the skin. As the fat melts away, the skin becomes wonderfully crisp.

A few tricks make an even bigger difference:

  • Pat the wings completely dry.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket.
  • Cook in a single layer.
  • Flip halfway through cooking.
  • Toss in the garlic butter sauce after air frying.

Steps to prepare Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Wings

We both love the flavor of raw garlic and so, I didn’t mind it for the sauce. If you are not too fond of raw garlic, cook the minced garlic in butter for a while at low heat. Or use Garlic Confit. Roasted garlic adds a ton load of flavors.

1- Grate a block of parmesan cheese to a big mixing bowl.

2- To the same bowl now add lots of grated garlic cloves.

3- Next you add soft butter and not melted butter. Keeping the butter mixture at room temperature helps to coat the hot chicken wings all around.

As you add the hot chicken wings to the room temperature butter mixture, it starts to melt just a little. The sauce coats all over the chicken wings evenly. It forms a good thick layer of garlic and Parmesan.

4- Pat dry the chicken wings and add it to another mixing bowl.

5- Add the dry spices to the chicken wings along with either corn flour or baking powder. And toss it all around to coat it evenly on the wings.

6 – Layer the chicken wings on a wired baking rack, spray oil and place the rack on a baking tray and bake until crispy. You have to flip once in between and spray oil.

7- Once it’s done, toss the hot chicken wings with the butter parmesan and garlic sauce that was prepared and kept aside. Keep tossing the wings until the sauce evenly coats the wings.

8- Garnish with finely chopped cilantro leaves and serve warm.

Tips for the Crispiest Air Fryer Wings

Dry the Wings Well – Moisture is the enemy of crispy skin. Take a few extra minutes to thoroughly dry each wing.

Don’t Skip Baking Powder – This simple ingredient dramatically improves the texture.

Avoid Overcrowding – Cook in batches if needed. Air circulation is what makes the wings crispy.

Storage Instructions

Refrigerator – Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Freezer – Freeze cooked wings for up to 3 months.

How to Reheat

The air fryer is the best way to restore crispiness. Reheat at 375°F for 5 to 7 minutes.

Avoid microwaving whenever possible since it softens the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use baking powder or baking soda?

Always use baking powder. Baking soda has a much stronger flavor and can make the wings taste unpleasant.

Can I use frozen chicken wings?

Yes. Thaw them completely and pat them very dry before seasoning.

Do I need to flip the wings?

Yes, flipping halfway through ensures even browning and crispines.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes! Cook the wings first, refrigerate them, then reheat in the air fryer and toss with the garlic parmesan butter just before serving.

Can I make them without Parmesan?

Sure! They’ll become delicious garlic butter wings instead.

Recipe Tips

  • Use freshly grated Parmesan for the best flavor.
  • Fresh garlic always tastes better than jarred garlic.
  • Do not melt butter to make the sauce. Room temperature butter will coat the hot wings evenly.
  • Finish with extra Parmesan immediately before serving.
  • Serve while hot for maximum crispiness.

Notes

KEY STEP to follow for that perfect crispy texture – First, pat dry the chicken wings. Then add your dry spices, season with salt and make sure to coat it evenly with corn starch.

AIR FRIED or BAKED?

I used to always bake chicken wings by layering the wings on a cookie wire rack. But then I started using Air Fryer! And I felt that even though my Air fryer cooks in small batches, it cooks much faster and gives that perfect crispy texture.
