Combined with soaring vocals and layered production, Jackson Turnbull’s “Echoes” is cinematic pop excellence.
Sometimes, it’s difficult to understand why an artist isn’t wildly popular. After listening to “Echoes,” that’s how I feel. If you like cinematic pop, you need to listen to “Echoes” immediately.
Jackson Turnbull’s falsetto is to die for. It’s completely flawless. He spends the verses in his chest voice, but the moment he enters his higher range in the choruses, it’s stunning. I love when a male vocalist has a strong falsetto like that, so it was really exciting to hear that sound.
The production is nothing short of atmospheric. Listening to this with a pair of good headphones is a must. The lyric video is an image of him flying over a lake, possibly being beamed up by aliens, and honestly, I get it. It doesn’t sound like a science fiction score, but there is something very cinematic about this that feels like flying.
“Echoes” is reminiscent of artists like early Twenty One Pilots, Conan Gray, and Troye Sivan (especially his earlier work), all of which I love. At the same time, it doesn’t feel derivative at all. I could definitely see Jackson Turnbull blowing up.
Overall, I was blown away by this single, and can’t wait to hear more from Jackson in the future.
