11 Simple Spiritual Things to Do for Beginners
Here are eleven simple spiritual things to do for beginners, along with practical tips to help you build a meaningful daily practice. Think of this list as your simple guide to starting your spiritual journey with clarity and peace.
1. Practice meditation
First on this spiritual list is to practice meditation.
Meditation is an important practice for spiritual growth. It helps to still the mind, open the heart, and create a deeper connection with your true essence.
When you meditate, you’re able to move beyond the busyness of everyday life and connect with your inner being. And, through this connection you can access a deeper understanding of yourself and your life, allowing you to gain clarity on your purpose and find peace within.
Regular meditation can help to bring more awareness to your thoughts and feelings, helping you to make decisions more consciously and from a place of love. It can also help to strengthen your connection to the divine, providing a sense of oneness with the universe and all its inhabitants.
Meditation is a powerful tool for spiritual growth and can help to open up new possibilities in your life.
It’s personally done so much for me and helped me to connect to my source (God, the Universe, whatever you believe in) better. But, I want to tell you that I believe there are different ways to meditate – so find what works best and feels right for you!
2. Be mindful of your environment
Being mindful of your environment and the people in it can be a great way to promote spiritual growth. It can help you become more aware of your surroundings, the people around you, and even the potential for spiritual connection.
When we take the time to observe our environment and the people in it, we can learn to appreciate the beauty and lessons that each moment can bring.
We can also become aware of our own thoughts, feelings, and energy, and how they affect our interactions with others. And, this can help us to become more aware of our own spiritual needs and how to better meet them.
Additionally, when we’re mindful of our environment we can be more open to the possibility of spiritual connection and growth. And, this can allow us to become more in tune with our own spiritual journeys.
And, your personal spiritual journey is important! You know, we have so much going on around us and on the outside of us – but what goes on inside of us is so much more important.
I say this because what goes on with your inner self will show on the outside. It’ll affect your whole world in some way, even if it’s in little ways. And, those little things will add up.
So if you want to be stable and have true peace, don’t forget to work on your inner self. It’s an important part of your spiritual journey! Pay attention to yourself, to how you’re feeling, and to how the things and people around you make you feel.
3. Practice gratitude
Another great spiritual thing to do for beginners is to practice gratitude. It has so many benefits and has made a huge impact on my life, and I believe it’ll help you, too!
Gratitude can help you appreciate the small things in life, remember the blessings in your life, and be mindful of the present moment. It’ll also help you find a deeper connection with yourself, spirit, and the world around you.
Gratitude can open your heart and mind to new possibilities, deepen your understanding of yourself and your spirituality, and lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling spiritual life.
Overall, through gratitude we can learn to be more aware of our blessings, to be more present in every moment, and to be more connected to our spiritual journeys.
So, how will YOU start practicing gratitude more often? Think of some things you can do daily that’ll help with this, and you won’t regret it. I’ve found from my own experience that gratitude leads to true happiness.
I personally like to regularly look for the beauty in things, and feel gratitude for it. And, this always helps in some way. If I’m outside with my child but because of life issues I’m not feeling it, I look around at nature in awe.
That’s just one example, but you get the idea. There’s way more to be grateful for than we usually realize.
4. Develop a regular spiritual practice
A regular spiritual practice can be a great way to help you grow spiritually.
When you commit to a daily practice of prayer, meditation, or contemplation, you’re able to create a space to connect with yourself, your spirituality, and the divine. And, this can help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and spirit, which can lead to personal growth.
Additionally, devoting time to your spiritual practice can help you develop greater self-awareness, peace of mind, and a sense of connection to something greater than yourself.
This can be incredibly helpful in times of difficulty or confusion, and can help you find clarity and direction.
All in all, engaging in a spiritual practice can be a great way to grow spiritually!
Some spiritual practices to try
There are many spiritual practices to choose from! Some popular ones include:
- meditation
- mindfulness
- yoga
- prayer
- journaling
- & energy healing
Each of these practices can help you to cultivate deeper self-awareness, connection with the Divine, and emotional and mental well-being.
If you’d like to explore spiritual practices, the best thing to do is to start with one that resonates with you and explore it more deeply.
5. Listen to your inner voice or higher guidance
I had to include listening to your inner voice or higher guidance, because it has helped me grow spiritually possibly more than anything else.
Your inner voice will guide you and help you understand things, so take time to get quiet and pay attention to your inner self. And, the same goes for your higher guidance (God, your angels, the Universe, whatever you look to for guidance or call your source).
Don’t go through life without the help of your higher guidance – those that are there and able to help you and guide you. And when you’re feeling alone, know that this is an illusion, that you have your source (your maker) with you, and that you were never meant to have to go it alone without help.
I say this from experience. And, it might sound a little “out there” at first if you aren’t used to not only praying but hearing from your source – but know that it was never meant to be one sided.
We can pray of course, but if we take time to also listen for guidance we’ll get it in one way or another. Perhaps we’ll hear thoughts in our heads that give just the right wise answer (this can be your source talking to you). Or, we might get a sign or confirmation afterward from somewhere or someone. We might get both!
But however it happens for you, know that the quiet time taken to listen will pay off and make up for itself. Think about it – if a little time with your inner self gives you tips you would’ve otherwise taken days to think up, then it’s well worth it!
And again, I speak from experience when I tell you that it really does help. Simply knowing that I’m not all alone anymore (I actually never was) and that I have help from a source that knows more than I can, brings me peace.
And, I believe it’ll bring you peace too!

6. Seek out spiritual teachers
Seeking out spiritual teachers is a great way to expand your spiritual growth. And it makes sense, because we should be learning from those that are further along in things than us. It’s a shortcut that the best of the best use!
So, look online or somewhere else for people that talk and teach about spiritual things. Learning from those who’ve already developed their spiritual practice can provide invaluable insight into how to deepen your own spiritual journey.
Additionally, having a mentor or guide along the way can help you to stay on track and find inspiration in times of difficulty.
It’s important, though, that you choose someone who has a style of teaching that resonates with you so that you get the most out of the experience.
7. Engage in spiritual study
Engaging in spiritual study is a great way to further your spiritual growth and understanding. By studying spiritual texts or videos, engaging in meditation and prayer, and reflecting on your beliefs, you can:
- gain insight into the divine
- gain clarity on the purpose of life
- & deepen your connection with the divine
Spiritual study can help you gain perspective on the bigger picture, as well as provide you with a greater understanding of your place in the universe.
It can also help to increase your faith and trust in the divine, and provide you with a sense of inner peace and contentment.
Ultimately, engaging in spiritual study can help you have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the divine, and help you to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life. So, it’s good to make time for this.
8. Engage in activities that bring you joy & fulfillment
Engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment is an important part of spiritual growth, because it:
- helps you stay connected to your deeper purpose & live a life full of mindful awareness
- brings you into the present moment, where you can experience a sense of peace & connection with yourself & the world around you
- causes you to become more mindful of your spiritual journey & the progress that you’re making, as a result of finding joy in the present moment
- helps you stay motivated & energized to continue growing spiritually
Overall, you need to do things that you enjoy because it’ll give you a sense of fulfillment. And, as I’ve found, you probably won’t find your calling in something that makes you feel miserable.
So, what are the things that you enjoy? What makes you feel good? What does the opposite, and makes you feel bad? Think about this, and try to do more of what leaves you feeling good.
You’ll feel more peace from doing so, and inner peace is priceless!
9. Be open to learning & growing
One of the best spiritual things to do for beginners is to have an open mind and be willing to learn new things. This could mean:
- exploring different practices and teachings
- exposing yourself to different perspectives
- or just learning something new each day
With an open heart and mind, we can learn and grow spiritually as well as personally. And, being a lifelong learner is a good trait to have!
Sometimes as we get older we get set in our ways and used to our habits and rituals, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t another way to do things. And yet, we’ll never find those things that help us grow and expand as individuals if we aren’t open minded.
So, just try to be open to learning and growing.
You don’t have to compromise on what you believe, but you’ll never know what all you resonate with if you don’t first search for knowledge with an open mind.
Again, I say this from personal experience. For a long time I felt certain ways about life and spiritual things, without realizing that they weren’t all my beliefs. But once I started looking for spiritual knowledge with an open mind, I was able to come to my own conclusions. And, it feels good!
We all have to walk our own paths, but having open minds can help us in different ways throughout our lives. So, what are YOU interested in learning more about? Allow yourself to explore.
10. Be humble and have an open heart
Being humble is an important part of any spiritual growth journey, as it helps to open up a person’s heart to the divine. It also means recognizing that you’re part of a much larger whole, and that you’re here to learn, grow, and contribute to the world.
When someone is humble, they put aside any sense of self-importance, and instead look to serve others, to listen to their inner wisdom, and to be open to the guidance of the universe.
And by allowing ourselves to be open and humble, we can become more aware of the interconnectedness of all things, and begin to see the beauty and power in the small things that make up our lives.
We can also learn to trust in the divine guidance and support that’s available to us, and so begin to experience a deeper connection to our true selves and the divine.
11. Stay connected to your spiritual community
And finally, you might try staying connected to a spiritual community.
This could be an important part of fostering your spiritual growth, as being part of a spiritual community can provide support, guidance, and encouragement.
And, your spiritual community can even be found online. There’s no specific way that it has to be. So, again, find what works for you.
Just know that by being connected to your spiritual community you’ll be able to learn from others who have different perspectives and experiences, which can help you gain a deeper understanding of things.
