On 6 and 13 October, drone attacks struck commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, sinking ships and triggering rescue operations. Further incidents on 14 and 15 October left two vessels ablaze near Romania’s coast, including within its territorial waters, with suspected drone strikes under investigation. This escalation has brought the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine closer to both EU and NATO members and placed maritime security directly into Bulgaria’s election debate.
