Termites Become More Active in the Summer
Just like most insects, termites become more active in the summer months between July and September, but unlike other insects, they do not hibernate in the winter. They stay active year-round. When the temperature is high in the summer that is when they are at their peak. This means the colony has reached its max population and the termite swarmers will start to leave and start a new colony. The problem with this is that if you already have an existing infestation, the swarmers don’t go far and will start a new colony under or around your home.
Termites are Most Active when it Rains
Termites are active in the summer months, but they become most active during rainy weather. When you add rainy weather and warm nights that is the best combination for termites. A termite colony can reach a population of more than 300,000 during this time. This is also the time swimmers become more active and start to form their new colonies. Termite colonies can grow rapidly, and before you know it, they could be on your property and your house.
Signs of a Termite Infestation?
Once you start to notice termites crawling around your home, that means you have already had an infestation, and they most likely have already caused damage. It is important to learn and recognize some signs that come with termites that indicate that termites are in your home. Some of the signs to look for are:
Termite wings- swarmers produce wings to establish colonies and reproduce. once Swarmers have established their colonies then they shed their wings and continue to work on the colony.
Mud tubes– you may see mud tubes in your crawlspace, or on the exterior of your wall or foundation. These mud tubes are the pathway for termites. They look like veins along the wall.
Termite droppings– if you see termite droppings, then you have a termite infestation. These droppings can appear to look like sawdust. If you feel like you have sawdust where you shouldn’t be having sawdust, it may be termite droppings.
Visible Damage– if you notice that you have damage in the wood on your home, this could be from termites. You may also notice warping on your wall ceiling and floor and bubbling or peeling of your paint.
Do Termites Go Away After Summer?
Unfortunately, termites do not go away after summer. While visible swarms may decrease, colonies remain active year round inside wood and underground, continuing to eat and cause structural damage through the fall, winter and spring
