How to Deal With UK Airport Delays

Few things test your patience like airports.

You’re already required to arrive hours ahead of departure in case of queues, and once your bags have been dropped, you’re left with few ways to pass the time other than the obligatory walk around Duty Free.

With this in mind, it’s not surprising that even a slight flight delay can feel like the end of the world.

At best, it eats into your precious holiday time. At worst, it can cause you to miss crucial connections, costing you more than time.

Why Do Delays Occur?

UK airports handle huge passenger numbers throughout the year, particularly during school holidays and bank holiday weekends.

A single issue early in the day often creates knock-on delays that spread across several flights, because airlines work to preset schedules and aircraft rotations that offer little flexibility.

The weather is consistently one of the biggest factors.

Heavy fog can reduce visibility for pilots to dangerously low levels, and strong winds can restrict landing.

During the summer, staff shortages and baggage handling problems are often the main culprits behind disruption.

This year, the new EU Entry/Exit System, which requires UK passengers to provide biometric data when travelling to/from countries in the Schengen Area, is set to cause significant delays, with holidaymakers already being warned to allow additional time.

Knowing Your Rights

Many travellers underestimate how much support airlines must provide during long delays. Under UK passenger rights rules, airlines often need to offer meals and refreshments, depending on the length of delay and flight distance.

They’re also required to effectively communicate updates and help with booking you a replacement flight if they’re at fault.

You may also qualify for compensation if the airline caused the disruption.

Keep digital copies of your boarding pass, booking confirmation and official delay notifications because these documents make claims far easier later.

If your flight delay stretches overnight, airlines usually need to arrange accommodation and transport between the airport and hotel.

Staying Connected

A delayed flight quickly becomes more stressful if your phone battery is low and you cannot contact family and friends or your pre-booked transport or hotel to warn them of the delay.

Failing to effectively rearrange plans can leave you stranded or without somewhere to stay when you do arrive.

Most UK airports now offer charging stations, but these are few and far between, so consider carrying a portable charger in your hand luggage to keep your smartphone topped up when needed.

Most UK airports also have free Wi-Fi, although this can struggle under heavy demand.

Remember, you should take steps to keep your data private when using public Wi-Fi.

Packing Portable Entertainment

Airport delays feel longer when you rely entirely on scrolling social media feeds, and this is a surefire way to drain your precious smartphone battery.

A small amount of planning before you travel can make waiting around feel far less draining.

Download digital entertainment like podcasts and playlists ahead of time, which can be streamed even when your smartphone is in aeroplane mode.

Take advantage of games websites and play casual games like 80 ball bingo and card favourites like solitaire.

Games with short rounds and simple rules work well for awkward waits because they can be easily picked up and put down as and when the mood strikes or announcements are made.

Protecting Your Trip

Travel insurance proves its worth when things go wrong in relation to your trip.

When disruption affects your pre-made plans, like hotel bookings and connecting flights, you may be able to claim compensation towards financial losses.

Policies vary widely, so checking delay coverage before you travel can prevent unpleasant surprises later.

Some insurers begin covering expenses after only a few hours, while others require much longer waiting times.

Photograph important documents and store them securely online, too, so you can access them from any device.

Smart spending habits also protect your budget during delays.

Airport food prices are steep, so carrying refillable water bottles and simple snacks can save money and spare you from joining long queues during busy periods.
