A companion to Blackout and Blizzard. A story of a boy and his favorite place in town. A natural disaster and the damages it costs. A chance to rebuild and create a community.

The Summer of the Bone Horses: A Chapter BookThe Summer of the Bone Horses: A Chapter Book by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’d been curious about this since it came out. A good read for those who enjoy slice of life stories. A boy ends up staying with his grandparents part of the summer as his father gets medical treatment. He learns about reservation life and learns responsibilities. Based on the author’s brother’s experiences.

The Story of Gumluck the Wizard: Book OneThe Story of Gumluck the Wizard: Book One by Adam Rex
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It’s weird how I wasn’t really into this book when I was physically reading the book and only got through a couple chapters but, once I listened to the audiobook, I was hooked and instantly listened to the next two books in the series. This would work as a fun read-aloud for maybe second graders and younger who enjoy more of this kind of fantasy. Has lots of humor and heart.

You can view all my reviews over on The StoryGraph and Goodreads. Please consider supporting independent bookstores when you want to buy any of the books I’ve mentioned via Bookshop.org or Libro.fm.
