National Parks of the U. S. A. by Kate Siber & Chris Turnham – The Strawberry Post

Wow, what an amazing, interesting and visually stunning book all about America’s national parks. America is filled with national parks scattered across the whole area from the east with places like the Everglades to the central and west with the famous Grand Canyon; Alaska with it’s often snowy wilderness and even parks in far places like Hawaii. America is full of national parks filled with a variety of wild plants and animals and different climates and in this book you can find out more about them. The hardback is filled with thick matt pages of some lovely illustrations and text. The cover has some foil details and has a texture resembling a painter’s canvas.

The book begins with an introduction about the national parks in general before each section of the book then covers a different area of America: East, Central, South West Rocky Mountains, Alaska and the Tropics. There is an introduction to each area along with a map showing where the national parks in that area are located before each park is explored in more detail. Each park is given its own introduction along with a large illustration of some people exploring the area and then the next double page or pages shows details about the park including all the wildlife you can find there.

Every park shown has information about its location, size and when it was founded. Then there are pictures accompanying every fact with a small sentence or two about each animal or plant in the area. Sometimes there’s a box that isn’t about the flora or fauna directly and I was fascinated to learn about other things you can see in some national parks such as cemeteries and old abandoned homes. Every fact is easy to read and absorb due to the fact there isn’t a lot of text per page and I found a lot of the information so interesting to learn with the illustrations really helping to add to the enjoyment.

The book is filled with some lovely and stunning colourful illustrations which give you a good idea of what certain animals and plants or general nature looks like while also retaining a charm to it. The book is filled with so many pictures and there are some lovely larger images of parks and people, as I said, at the start of each section and park. In the middle of the book the Grand Canyon national park has a special page which folds out from the centre on both sides essentially making the image unfolded a four page long illustration of the Grand Canyon.

The back of the book has more information about the national parks history and their connection to Indigenous Peoples and how we can all help in preserving the parks and what’s found there. Overall I really love this book. It’s a fascinating read for anyone interested and will give you a deeper insight into the wonderful national parks you can find across America.
