Queenslander offers private granny flat for adult kids saving for deposits

17 Kinmond Ave, Wavell Heights goes to auction on October 17.

A century-old Queenslander with a self-contained granny flat is offering families a solution for adult children saving for a home deposit.

The Wavell Heights property includes a self-contained granny flat giving young adults their own space with mum and dad close by.

For owners Melissa and Mark Allara, the space has already earned its keep through years of teenage sleepovers, school assignments, music rehearsals and rugby weekends as they raised their blended family of four children.

“If those walls could talk,” Mrs Allara said.

“It’s a beautiful opportunity to have your child segue into independent living while being able to save for their own home deposit at the same time.”

The property is listed with Place Ascot director and selling agent Drew Davies, who said the separate living quarters gave buyers a way to plan beyond their children’s school years. “Children grow up, but that doesn’t always mean they’re ready to move out,” Mr Davies said.

“A home like this gives families another option.

“They can have their own kitchen, bathroom and living space, with more independence and privacy while still being close to family.

“That could work for an adult child saving for a deposit, a parent coming to live with the family or guests staying for an extended visit.”

For Mrs and Mr Allara, the home was the beginning of their life together as a blended family.

They bought it nine years ago, looking for somewhere with enough room for four children and a place that felt like home.

“We walked in and fell in love with the house immediately,” Mrs Allara said.

Known as “Bimbimbee”, the circa-1920s Queenslander sits on an elevated 830sq m block and combines five bedrooms, three bathrooms and multiple living areas with a pool and established gardens.

High ceilings, exposed timber beams, polished timber floors and French doors retain its character, while the self-contained accommodation adds flexibility for the next family.

Mr Davies said the combination gave the property appeal well beyond its street presence. “The character is what catches your eye, but the layout is what makes you think about how your family could live here,” he said.

“There’s room to come together, room to spread out and a separate space that can serve a different purpose as the children get older.”

With their children now in their late teens and early twenties, Mrs and Mr Allara have downsized to Hamilton, leaving a home that has seen their family through some of its busiest years.

“It’s just been such a beautiful place to raise the family,” Mrs Allara said.

The property at 17 Kinmond Ave, Wavell Heights, will be auctioned on site at 9am on October 17.
