Bregoli, Jane. The Goat Lady Whispers to Bees (Published in 2025 by Skylight Studio Publisher). Jess and her brother David, who live with their mother, have become good friends with their neighbor Noelie Houle, a French Canadian immigrant who is known as “the Goat Lady” because she lives by herself on a rundown, postage-stamp-sized farm, where she raises goats and provides the community with much-needed goat’s milk. She also decides to put up bee hives so that she can have honey. Unfortunately, the bees escape from the box in which they are being shipped and are flying freely in the Post Office. How does Noelie get them all back in the box?
Back in 2010, I reviewed author Jane Bregoli’s first book, The Goat Lady, which introduced us to the life of Noelie Houle. The Goat Lady Whispers to Bees is just as informative and charming as its predecessor. In addition to learning about bees, goats, and nature in general, the reader will find a compassionate message about taking care of the earth and its creatures. There is also a heart-warming picture of intergenerational friendship. And the book is a thing of beauty with Bregoli’s illustrations entirely hand-painted in watercolors and oils. As it based on real events and true life people, I can honestly say that I very much liked it.
