This New PS5 FPS Will Depict a Harrowing and Often Overlooked Part of WW2 1

We’re all familiar with the Battle of Britain and Pearl Harbour, but there are some parts of World War 2 that rarely get told by Western media.

The Second Sino-Japanese War, a long-running conflict between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, is one such example.

This new game, The Defiant, from Chinese studio Hoothanes, promises to reveal more about the conflict, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s.

The press release reveals:

“You’re stepping on the land irrigated with warm blood. Boundless snowy forest, heavily guarded lanes, dangerous villages behind the enemy lines. In these places you’ll experience the serious atmosphere during the War of Resistance against Japanese invasion.”

All wars are horrific, of course, but this particular conflict is notorious for its many, many harrowing chapters, including the Nanjing massacre, depicted in last year’s movie, Dead to Rights.

It seems the dev wants to be as historically accurate as possible here, saying “every plant and every brick silently recounts the undeniable historical facts”.

That extends to the weaponry too, which is all inspired by firearms used in the real conflict.

It’s interesting to see a different type of war story here – one seldom depicted by Western developers.

The gameplay looks a little rote in my opinion, but if the studio can actually depict the events of the Second Sino-Japanese War with accuracy, then this could make for a disturbing but ultimately engaging campaign.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
