U2 Announce New Album That Includes a Dolly Parton Duet, Share Video for New Song “Silencio”

U2 have announced a new album, Carnaval De Luz, and shared its latest single, “Silencio,” via a music video. The album also features “Torn,” a duet with the late Dolly Parton that’s said to be her final vocal performance (she passed away last month). Carnaval De Luz is due out November 13 via Interscope. Carnaval De Luz follows Easter Lily, an EP the band surprise-released in April timed to Easter, with one song featuring Brian Eno. Easter Lily was the band’s second EP of the year, following February’s politically charged Days of Ash (which was timed to Ash Wednesday). Days of Ash included “American Obituary,” a new song inspired by the death of Renée Nicole Macklin Good at the hands of ICE agents in Minneapolis. It was one of our Songs of the Week.
U2 features Bono, Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton, and The Edge. This week marks the 50th anniversary of Mullen putting a handwritten note on the noticeboard of Mount Temple Comprehensive School on the Northside of Dublin in September 1976 that read “Drummer Seeks Musicians To Form Band.”
Jacknife Lee produced the album. “Torn” was co-written by the band with Parton and Johnny McDaid. Daniel Lanois played pedal steel on the song. Brian Eno co-wrote and played synthesizers on “Go (Carnaval De Luz).”
The Edge had this to say about the album in a press release: “It’s a messy, provocative, sacred collection of songs—and features the first-ever use of flat-wound strings on a U2 recording. Just saying.”
Bono says: “Roll up, roll up, roll up! Bring your purple socks, your broken hearts, your rose-tinted naivety… oh be amazed in the hall of mirrors. There will be loud guitars, deep bass, some ecstatic rhythms and, yes, some silver tears will make an appearance!
“‘Cause in the near distance just outside our carnival of light there are all kinds of creatures… the same imagination that brings us our creativity can also bring us monsters. So we make the drums louder. We build a bigger fire. We make our stories wilder and funnier. We make the melodies sweeter and the songs, they better shine, because if the world is in darkness we better not be.”
Cliqua (the Mexican-American directing duo Pasqual Gutiérrez and Raúl “RJ” Sanchez) directed the “Silencio” video, which was shot in Mexico City.
