We tend to think of bravery as a feeling, as this sudden jolt of courage that appears when we most need it, that is if you’re lucky enough to feel it.
But what if courage is not really about what we feel in a given moment of crisis or urgency, but instead is merely the embodiment of what we actually do in those moments?
That’s the reframe my guest Kimberly Davis encourages us to make in this episode of my “Leadership Biz Cafe” podcast.
Kimberly is an author, educator, and TEDx speaker who has been teaching at Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business Executive Education. She’s also spent four years working with the Bush Institute’s WE Lead program, where she worked to empower female leaders across the Middle East and North Africa.
She’s also the author of the award-winning book, “Brave Leadership – Unleash Your Most Confident, Powerful, and Authentic Self to Get the Results You Need”, which has recently been revised and updated.
As Kimberly points out during our conversation, we should think of bravery as something we do, and what we should do is understand what matters to our employees so that they choose to follow us instead of being obligated to.
It’s a fun and insightful conversation that will help you rethink how you understand the role bravery plays in today’s leadership … and where to begin applying at a time when things are far from certain.
