I have to say we had a glorious day at La Mare Wine Estate. It was a bright Autumn day and we arrived at the vineyard just before lunch.
There’s a lovely cafe where you can partake in sharing boards, meals, sandwiches, and some incredible chunky chips! The sandwich was fabulous but the chips were out of this world! I do love a chunky chip!
The cafe itself is very comfortable, it serves tea, coffee and cake both inside and out. You take your table number, order at the counter and your food is brought to you. We thought this was a really good idea before the wine tasting rather than drinking on an empty stomach!
La Mare Wine Estate – Wine Tasting Tour
The tour itself was really interesting and the guide very knowledgeable and friendly.
We walked in amongst the grapevines and learnt about the variety of grapes as well as the apples that are grown in the vineyard.
From there we walked to the distillery and saw the barrels and vats where the wine is made.
We also had an interesting lesson on how the sediment is drained from fizz.
Later we were taken into a testing room where we tried the vineyards’ sparkling wine, white wine and then finally red wine.
Once we’d finished, we walked into the shop and had a look at all the products that the vineyard produces, including Jersey black butter which counter intuitively does not, in fact, include butter and is more of a byproduct of making cider but is a fabulous product that would work well on a cheese toastie I think!
We travelled to the vineyard from St Helier by bus, which of course meant no issues with drinking wine! Just a quick note to say how easy the buses are running around 1 an hour and priced at £2.75 each way. It’s so easy and the bus stop is right outside the vineyard.
Taking the wine tour at La Mare Wine Estate is a lovely way to spend a day in Jersey!
