Churchill’s, Ricardo Pinto Nunes (Winemaker and Production Manager,
Churchill Graham):
On
the 2025 harvest
In
mid-September, with the harvest almost complete, only a few plots of Touriga
Nacional remained to be harvested at Quinta da Gricha and another in Ervedosa,
the grapes have been in excellent condition throughout, making sorting
efficient both in the vineyard and in the winery. Starting the harvest earlier
this year allowed us to keep a steady pace, picking under consistently
favorable weather conditions.
At
the Quinta da Gricha winery, the racking of the Port wine lagares went
smoothly, and the last two small Sousão lagares were fermenting as we
approached the end of harvest.
For
DOC Douro wines, the white fermentations are now complete, and most of the reds
have also finished alcoholic fermentation. The Port wines show impressive
color and structure, while the DOC Douro wines stand out for their fruit
intensity and elegance.
In conclusion
We
completed the harvest on September 28, with grapes remaining in
excellent sanitary condition until the very end. Overall yields were slightly
lower in some vineyards compared to last year, partly due to a less effective
flowering period and some sunburn effects observed in late June.
At Quinta
da Gricha, however, yields were higher than last year, moving counter to
the general trend across the other vineyards.
There
is a strong sense of optimism regarding the potential quality of the wines,
both Port and DOC Douro. We now look forward to the winter period to confirm
our high expectations for the 2025 vintage.
Porto Dos Santos (Alexandre Antas Botelho, producer and blender, Porto Dos
Santos)
The 2025 harvest was approaching, with promises
of demonstrations, low grape prices and the possibility of significant
quantities of fruit being left on the vines, as a result of chronic planting
and supply issues that have been occurring in the Douro region in recent
decades. Throughout the region, discussions about the necessary measures and
protests about the situation were felt, since it is among the smaller farmers
in the more traditional areas that the effects of the situation are most acute.
As a result of this same situation, the
abandonment of vineyards has increased and there was a clear disinvestment in
vineyards, since the prices per barrel of grapes (750 kg) that exceed the
“benefit” card do not even cover the costs of harvesting.
As for the conditions of the year itself, there
were significant drops in quantity, but it ended up being a year of high
quality. The high temperatures and dry weather that were felt throughout
the summer were mitigated during the harvest, bringing good ripening, extracted
musts with very good structure, opening the door to a possible Vintage
declaration, or even a Split Declaration together with the year 2024.
On another level, the questions that will be
carried forward from 2025 are: what consequences will this crisis have in the
medium/long term for the Douro, a default similar to what happened in the Jerez
region in the 1990s?
How could decisions be made and measures
implemented that the region so badly needs, with such a fragmented landscape
and so many conflicting and even antagonistic interests, Douro/Trade, Wine
Production/Tourism, Port Wine/Table Wine, Players with a vested interest in the
sector/Players whose presence in the market is a ‘real estate investment’. To address this
situation, urgent decisions taken on the fly are not enough, as was the case
this year, when there were not even enough grapes to justify distillation
measures. A broad consensus would be needed, which I do not see any interest in
achieving.
Quevedo Port Wines, Óscar Quevedo
(producer Quevedo Wines):
This
year, the Douro region experienced a warmer, drier winter, followed by a rainy
spring and a typically hot summer. However, when we began harvesting in
mid-August, we found extremely low yields in our vineyards – about 50% less than last year. Despite the smaller quantity, we are pleased to
share that the quality of this year’s harvest is exceptional.
I
believe it has been a surprisingly good year. We had a winter that was slightly
warmer than average and slightly drier than average, we had a lot of rain in spring, and the summer was hot, as is usual in the Douro. When we started
harvesting the Tinta Amarela grape for our claret, I think it was on 15th August,
we realised that yields were very low. So, compared to last year, we are
harvesting about 50% less, but what happens when quantity is low is that
quality usually goes up, and this year this is very obvious. We had a much
lower production but with very high quality. I think it will be a Vintage Port
year to be remembered for many years to come. The colours are very intense,
the musts are very fresh, with lots of tannins, lots of structure and very,
very balanced.
It
was also a good year for table wines, for those who appreciate full-bodied,
fresh and intense red wines, that is 2025. And the white wines are also
balanced. We harvested the white grapes earlier than in the previous year, in
fact, earlier than ever, to achieve balance and fresh grapes, and we are very
happy with the result.
Now
we will wait for winter to calm the musts and the wines, and once the first
clarification comes with the cold weather, we will be able to better understand
the potential of 2025.
Conclusion
This
year’s harvest went exceptionally well. 2025 turned out to be a wonderful
surprise, bringing us grapes of excellent quality. The harvest began on 15th August – another record for us in terms of such an early starting date –
with the harvest of Tinta Amarela grape variety for our Clarete, at Quinta da
Alegria. Little by little, and without interruption, we harvested the whites
and then the reds on the plots near the river. It was the first week of
September. From the second week of September onwards, we saw an increasing
concentration of musts, with lots of colour, tannin and aromatic intensity.
As the harvest moved away from the river and up the hillside, the grapes became
more concentrated and intense. The musts were fantastic, perhaps with slightly
low acidity, but apart from that, they were perfect. Once again, the grapes
harvested in October produced equally remarkable wines. We have very high
expectations for the production of great vintages.

Douro, vindima 2025: os comentários exclusivos
Churchill’s, Ricardo Pinto Nunes (Enólogo e Director d e Produção,
Churchill Graham):
No
Porto
Dos Santos, Alexandre Antas Botelho (produtor e
enólogo, Porto Dos Santos)
A
No
Quevedo (produtor Quevedo Wines)
ano a vindima correu excepcionalmente bem.
A vindima
