Returning to the North Fork of Long Island always feels like slipping into a custom-tailored silk dress: magnetic, effortless, and best experienced with fine, ice-cold bubbles in hand. On my latest weekend escape to Southold, my destination was none other than Sparkling Pointe. It is the undisputed crown jewel of traditional-method sparkling wine in the region. The moment we pulled onto the estate, the afternoon light caught the vines just right. Moreover, we were warmly welcomed in the rows by Vineyard Manager Leo Mora. I had followed Leo’s career on Instagram since his move to Long Island from Oregon. Because of this, sharing a side-by-side walk through the estate was an absolute delight. Leo brings a rare combination of West Coast cool-climate mastery and technical depth. As a result, he brings fresh energy to the estate. The team continues to take ambitious strides toward sustainable, organic, and biodynamic viticulture.

From Living Dirt to the Tank: High-Precision Viticulture and Cellar Secrets
Walking through the vineyard blocks with Leo felt like attending an exclusive, masterclass-level salon in viticulture. Though the estate’s winemaking chapter has evolved as founding winemaker Gilles Martin moved on, the team has made monumental strides. They have kept their eyes focused on long-term sustainability. Leo walked us through the region’s agricultural history, once dominated by chemical-heavy potato, cauliflower, and duck farming. He also explained how Sparkling Pointe is actively transitioning toward low-input, self-sustaining organic practices to heal the soil. The team balances biodynamic philosophy with rigorous data to rebuild living earth through controlled, side-by-side trial blocks.
Leo shared deep insights into their strategic clonal selection and how each distinct profile shapes their blending decisions:
- Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Clones: Dijon clones (like Clone 596) yield smaller berries with intense flavor concentration and elegant structure, while Pommard clones bring bright, juicy, fruit-forward vibrancy.
- Cool-Climate Specialty Clones: Plantings of the Swiss Wädenswil clone and the historic Charles Coury clone—a legendary Alsatian “suitcase clone”—impart rich complexity and refined acid balance to their core cuvées.
- Fungal-Resistant Hybrid Trials: To tackle Long Island’s humid coastal microclimate, Leo is running commercial trials with Arandell (NY 81), a Cornell-developed hybrid featuring floral, subtle petrol aromatics, soft acidity, and natural disease resistance.
Harvest season in Southold
Unlike neighboring growers crafting full-bodied still reds who harvest into late October and risk devastating autumn rains, sparkling wine grapes demand precise chemistry. Grapes are picked early in September at exact Brix and acidity levels before secondary bottle fermentation. After our walk, we stepped inside the production facility. This was an absolute highlight of the day. Watching the cellar crew actively bottling on the production line was pure magic. Sampling crisp base wines straight from the stainless steel tanks with Leo was a revelation. Ultimately, this demonstrated how the méthode champenoise is executed in Long Island with mathematical precision and unwavering respect for tradition. Sparkling Pointe houses the finest press and disgorgement machinery in the region. In addition, it acts as an engine that finishes the final sparkling stages for several neighboring wineries across the North Fork.

Sips, Caviar, and Pure Terroir: Decoding the Portfolio
Transitioning from the cool cellar into the tasting salon, the estate’s signature glamour takes center stage beneath sweeping crystal chandeliers. Sitting down to savor curated caviar service alongside exquisite small plates, we tasted through the sparkling portfolio side-by-side:
- Blanc de Blancs 2020: A 100% Chardonnay sparkling offering crisp green apple, lemon curd, and a delicate salinity that echoes the nearby ocean breeze.
- Seduction 2020 Blanc de Noirs: Crafted from dark grapes, this structural beauty offers impressive mid-palate weight, subtle red berry nuance, and an elegant, dry finish.
- Boiseau 2019: An extraordinary, top-tier cuvée from a select premium parcel. Pure luxury in a glass, displaying complex autolytic notes of warm baked pastry, toasted brioche, and a seamless, persistent bead.
- Seduction Brut 2015: A gorgeous vintage standout showing majestic maturity, filled with toasted hazelnut, orchard fruit, and a remarkably silky mousse.
- Brut Nature: The undisputed favorite of my flight. Stripped of dosage, this vintage expression is pure, unadulterated terroir: laser-focused, bone-dry, and dancing with vibrant citrus zest and electric mineral precision.
While the rest of the lineup remains solid, these specific cuvées prove that North Fork sparkling wine holds its own on any global stage.
