The significance of being “Nacional”. Quinta do Noval’s precious little vineyard.
When we think of the Douro vineyards, there is one that has achieved the status of an emblematic vineyard of the region and the coutry. A small exceptional plot discreetly located in the heart of the historic Quinta do Noval, next to the estate’s buildings, in the Pinhão river valley.
The vineyard’s “Nacional” designation comes precisely from the fact that the vines are directly rooted in Portuguese soil, with their own roots, without the use of American rootstok, i.e., made up of traditional Douro
grape varieties planted in national soil, exactly as was the case in the
region before the invasion and destruction caused by phylloxera (a tiny insect, a yellow lice that feeds on the roots of the vine, drying out the plant), which
reached the Douro vineyards in 1868. This scourge destroyed the majority of the
region’s vineyards (with the exception of three or four vineyards that weren’t
affected), but the extraordinary thing about this small parcel of vines is that
they survived and remained immune and resistant to phylloxera, which is an
unusual and rare phenomenon and the reason for it is unknown, defying all
knowledge and cultivation practices.
At
the time of the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century, of all the solutions
tested, the one that proved most effective was the use of American rootstock, i.e.
the combination of a vine that is resistant to phylloxera (the rootstock) with
the desired grape variety (the scion). The rootstock solution is now widely
used and it also showed, in addition to pest resistance, to improve plant
growth and productivity, water management and grape quality. With this method it has been
possible to maintain the vineyards with the Douro’s traditional noble grape
varieties.
In
this particular case, Quinta do Noval was hit in 1851, first by powdery mildew
and later by phylloxera, at a time in its history when it was going through a
rather decadent period. Then the descendants of Rebello Valente (who had bought
the estate in 1862) sold the property in 1894 to António José da Silva who, in
turn, together with his son-in-law Luís Vasconcellos Porto, began a recovery phase
of the vineyards and the estate, of its importance and reputation.
The
origin of the Nacional vineyard is
not exactly known, since the documentation that made up the Quinta do Noval
archive was destroyed by the great fire that occurred in 1981 in the Vila Nova
de Gaia warehouses. We know that between 1880 and 1890 Quinta do Noval was hit
by phylloxera, which ravaged the vineyards. In 1894, António José da Silva
embarked on a plan to restore the property and replant it with American vines,
which were then grafted with the local indigenous grape varieties. As part of this
plan, the following interesting reference was recorded in a Quinta do Noval
document: ‘António José da Silva selected a small plot of vines where he
began an exhaustive fumigation of the soil with a carbon sulphide solution.’
According to Cristiano van Zeller (responsible for the administration of Quinta
do Noval from 1982 to 1994), at this stage there were important chemical
interventions in the soil, and in his grandfather’s time, there were still
large syringes used to apply a solution based on carbon sulphide over the years
as a method of combating phylloxera.
Vineyard
characterisation.
The
Nacional vineyard is a small, reserved
and persistent vineyard that was planted a century ago, in 1924, and
consists of a total of 6,000 vines planted, as we mentioned, directly
into the schist soil. These are two small plots of old vines planted on nine traditional terraces, varying in size, with a total area of 1,6 hectares and a north-west exposure, at an
altitude of 375 metres and a space between vines of around 1 metre. The
composition of the soil is schist.
The
vineyard currently has an average age of 50 years. It is made up of a field-blend of various traditional
Douro grape varieties, with a predominance of the Sousão variety (which makes
up around 35% of the vineyard and is certainly at the origin of the wine’s
colour intensity) and also with an important presence of the Touriga Nacional,
Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Barroca
varieties. The fact that they have not been grafted does not seem to harm the
longevity of the vines, however, there are some differences to be noted when comparing it with the others grafted vines that are nearby, from the outset it has a less obvious vigour,
which is revealed by the small trunks of the vines, lower foliage density and a less intense green colouring of the leaves, smaller bunches of grapes and a
production that is approximately half that of a normal vineyard, but which nevertheless
gives the grapes greater concentration.
There
are three types of vine trellising systems used: Guyot, spur and cane.
One of the terraces of the Nacional vineyard consists of the vineyard’s nursery, a
small plot of land where the vines are also directed planted in the soil and take
several years to take root, and that will ensure the future of the vineyard.
After the pruning work, the best vines are selected and then planted so that in
the future they can replace the gaps left by the vines and grape varieties of
the Nacional vineyard that are lost. Around 20 to 30 vines are replanted each
year, using the same grape variety planted directly in the ground (these grapevines
take 7 years to produce their first bunches).
As a
curiosity, the experiment of planting grapevines directly in the soil without the
American rootstock has already been carried out in other parts of the property,
but these experiments proved to be unsuccessful and unviable.
Viticulture. All the work carried out in the vineyard is done by hand,
there is greater involvement in monitoring and caring for the vines. Organic
viticulture is practised, with methods that respect the natural balance of
the ecosystem, without the use of pesticides (the image below illustrates the
alternative system used successfully, every spring small ribbons that are pheromone diffusers placed in the vines to prevent communication and cause
sexual confusion between insects and thus control pests) or herbicides.
As we
mentioned above, the yield of this vineyard is much lower and corresponds to
almost half the yield per hectare and sometimes a third of the yield of a
normal vineyard, around 10 to 15 hectolitres per hectare, whereas the other
grafted vines produce on average around 30 to 35 hectolitres per hectare.
Vinification. In order to monitor the ripeness of the grapes and decide
on the right time to harvest, many berries of the different grape varieties are
collected from different parts of the vineyard and analyzed. The
Nacional vineyard is usually the last to be harvested, the harvest is done
by hand and the grapes are all picked at the same time. This operation is carried out in one day, “we do some
real gardening in the vineyard and in the harvest to get everything done on day
x, the day on which everything is harvested in a row”. In Quinta do Noval’s
old winery, all the work is handmade and winemaking is carried out using
traditional methods, the vineyard field blend in maintained and all the
grape varieties are vinified together in the same granite lagar, typically
lagar 7, which has a maximum capacity of approximately five Port wine casks
(3,000 litres), it’s own lagar that makes the same wine over the years. Foot
treading throughout the fermentation period ensures a good, continuous
maceration of the grape juice with the skins.
Fermentation
takes place over two days until the must is fortified with the addition of
grape brandy. The wine then goes to the estate’s wine cellar, located on a
lower level next to the lagar house, where it will spend a period of 18 months in an old
oak and chestnut large barrel, a “tonel” with a capacity of 2,500 litres. The
wine is constantly monitored and assessed throughout this period to evaluate
its quality and the decision to bottle it as a Vintage Nacional.
The
Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port.
“The Nacional is what it is because of the grapes and
where they come from. It’s terroir forges its greatness.” Christian
Seely
The Nacional vintage is the paradigm of a vintage Port from a single vineyard parcel, a
micro-terroir that, because it is a special vineyard, has its own character
and rhythm, different
from the rest of the vineyards on the estate and, in the years in which it stands
out, produces unparalleled wines with a particular and different dimension. The consequence of this is that it can and does happen that in years in which
the classic Quinta do Noval vintage Port is not declared, the Vintage Nacional
is declared and vise versa, such as 2007, a year of a generalised classic vintage
Port declaration, in which the Quinta do Noval vintage was declared and the
Vintage Nacional was not declared. And in those years when the Nacional vintage is not declared, the grapes from this vineyard are
included in the blend of the house’s classic vintage or LBV Ports.
Initially
it wasn’t commercialised, it was a wine destined to be offered to the house’s
best costumers, but which over time began to be increasingly highly valued.
As
mentioned above, the present Nacional vineyard was planted in 1924. The date
the vineyard
was planted makes the statement on some labels of older bottles “produced from
pre phylloxera grapes” not really accurate (like the examples in the following
images).
The
first Nacional vintage originated from the 1931 harvest, when the vineyard
was only 7 years old. It became a mythical vintage, referred to in 1999 as one
of the great wines of the 20th century by the specialised US magazine Wine
Spectator. The 1963 Nacional vintage, which has reached legendary status,
as been described as iconic, mythical and incredible and the adjectives go on and on. In turn, the 1994
Nacional vintage was classified by the same influential publication in 1997
with the maximum 100pts score. Later, the American critic James Suckling
awarded again 100pts to the 2011 Nacional vintage.
The low
productivity of the vineyard, with an annual production of 2000 to 3000 litres,
varies between 100 and 250 cases (200 cases of 12 bottles which totals 2400
bottles), which is a small quantity for the entire world market. A rare wine, it
is sold in small quantities and by quota to distributors.
For all
the reasons described, it is a vintage with a very distinctive character and a
magnificent reputation, highly appreciated and valued by specialists and
connoisseurs of extraordinary Port wines. It can be characterised as having a
consistent and characteristic profile throughout the various editions, with
greater depth, concentration and complexity, freshness and elegance.
These
are vintages that age for many decades, a Nacional vintage can last one hundred
years.
Quinta
do Noval Nacional Colheita Tawny Port? Some of the Port
wine from this vineyard remains in casks ageing in wood, as a test for a
future Nacional Colheita Tawny Port, which the house has been announcing for some years.
O
A
do Douro.
No
A
A
A composição do solo é xisto.
Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, Tinto Cão e Tinta Barroca.
casta plantada directamente no solo.
referimos atrás, a produção desta vinha é bastante menor e corresponde a cerca
As
Nacional.
O
Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional
“The Nacional is what it is because of the grapes and
where they come from. It’s terroir forges its greatness.” Christian
Seely.
especializada norte americana Wine Spectator.
A
100 anos.
