What Doesn’t Reset When the Calendar Does – Pibbles & More Animal Rescue

January may feel like a fresh start, but rescue doesn’t pause. Learn what January looks like for a foster-based rescue like Pibbles & More Animal Rescue and how you can help dogs who still need us.

January is often seen as a reset. New calendars, new goals, new beginnings. For many, it’s a time to slow down after the holidays and refocus for the year ahead.

But in rescue, while the calendar changes, the reality does not.

At Pibbles & More Animal Rescue (PMAR), January looks very much like December — and November — and every month before it. Dogs are still in our care every single day. Puppies, seniors, long-term residents, and dogs with medical or behavioral needs continue to rely on us, regardless of the season.

The Dogs Are Still Here

When the holidays end, our work doesn’t slow down. Dogs don’t magically find homes because it’s a new year. They still need food in their bowls, medications on schedule, vet visits coordinated, transport arranged, and consistent care from foster families.

Some of the dogs in our care have been waiting patiently for months. Others are just beginning their rescue journey. Each one represents a commitment we’ve already made — a promise that they will be cared for until the right home comes along.

Rescue isn’t seasonal. It’s ongoing.

Winter Brings Added Challenges

January brings challenges that many people don’t see. Cold weather makes transport more difficult and sometimes limits foster availability. Vet care doesn’t get cheaper in the winter — in fact, medical needs often increase. Senior dogs may struggle more in colder temperatures, and dogs recovering from illness or injury require extra support.

At the same time, January is historically one of the slowest months for donations. After the holidays, many families are tapped out — but rescue expenses don’t pause. Food, medication, training, and emergency vet care all continue.

For a foster-based rescue like PMAR, that means stretching every dollar even further.

What “Foster-Based” Really Means

PMAR operates without a physical shelter. Every dog in our care lives in a foster home. That means our dogs experience life in a real home environment — learning routines, building confidence, and showing who they truly are.

But it also means our rescue is entirely dependent on foster families, volunteers, and community support.

There’s no building to fall back on. No kennel space to temporarily house dogs. Every intake requires planning, coordination, and resources — especially in the winter months when foster availability can be tighter.

Operating Lean, Staying Committed

PMAR operates lean by necessity. Behind the scenes, volunteers process applications, manage social media, check in on recent adopters, communicate with fosters, and ensure every dog’s needs are met.

Some months are manageable. Others are tight. January is often one of the hardest months to balance.

But we keep going — because the dogs don’t get to wait for a “better time.” Their needs are immediate. Their lives depend on consistency and follow-through.

Why January Support Matters So Much

Support in January has an outsized impact. A donation made at the start of the year helps stabilize care for the months ahead. It allows us to plan responsibly, continue vetting dogs, and say yes when the next dog needs help.

There are many ways to support PMAR in January:

  • Making a one-time or recurring donation
  • Joining the PMAR Pack with a monthly gift
  • Fostering or fostering again
  • Sharing adoption posts
  • Purchasing items from foster wishlists
  • Engaging with and sharing our content

👉 Start the year by making a difference:
Donations can be made via PayPal at pibblesrus33@gmail.com, through our website at www.pmarinc.org, or via Zeffy (no processing fees)

All donations are tax-deductible.

The Dogs Don’t Know It’s January

Dogs don’t understand calendars. They don’t know it’s a new year or that donations slow down after the holidays. They only know whether they are safe, fed, warm, and cared for.

At PMAR, that responsibility doesn’t end when the holidays do. It continues into January — and every month after.

A New Way to Support Rescue Year-Round: The PMAR Pack

One of the most impactful ways to support rescue—especially during slower months like January—is through consistent, monthly giving. That’s why we’re excited to begin implementing the PMAR Pack, our recurring monthly donor program.

Monthly supporters provide something rescue desperately needs: stability. A predictable base of support allows us to plan ahead, budget responsibly, and continue caring for the dogs already depending on us—no matter the month or season.

Members of the PMAR Pack help ensure:

  • Food bowls stay full
  • Medications are covered
  • Vet visits don’t get delayed
  • Foster families remain supported

Even small monthly gifts add up to lifesaving impact when combined across our community. And because this support continues beyond a single moment, it helps us keep our promises to the dogs already in our care—and say yes when the next one needs help.

👉 Joining the PMAR Pack is an easy way to show up for rescue all year long, not just when emergencies make headlines.

Moving Forward Together

Rescue is a commitment, not a season. As we move into a new year, our mission remains unchanged: to give homeless, abandoned, and at-risk dogs the care, dignity, and second chances they deserve.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to start the year, supporting rescue is one that truly matters.

Whether you foster, donate, adopt, or simply help spread the word — you are part of the reason we can keep going.
