5 Trends I Wish Got More Attention at Shoptalk 2025

Communities provide immense value beyond generating immediate sales. When you turn customers into passionate advocates who champion your brand, they can offer ongoing engagement and organic word-of-mouth promotion.

Are brands underestimating the long-term potential of community building and engagement? I hope not—and if they are, Shoptalk should be redirecting them.

The post-purchase experience

At the event, there was no shortage of conversations about how to bring new customers into the fold for all industries. But what stood out to me was the lack of attention given to the post-purchase journey. This is a critical gap that many brands seem to overlook.

Sure, acquiring a customer is important, but what happens after that transaction? The post-purchase experience—from returns to customer support and the overall relationship with the brand after checkout—is just as vital, if not more so.

These conversations can provide a more holistic view of the customer experience; otherwise, we’re short-changing ourselves.

TV and streaming’s growing role

Retail media was a dominant conversation, and understandably so, given the exponential growth of this sector. But one important observation was the relatively small presence of TV and streaming giants at the event. Despite the growing importance of CTV and streaming platforms in shaping consumer behavior, only two major players from the space had booths at Shoptalk this year.

But based on conversations I had on the ground, it seems that at least one more major streaming platform is gearing up to have a strong presence at next year’s event. This suggests that the intersection of TV, streaming, and retail media is something marketers should be paying close attention to.

Those exploring CTV and streaming as part of their marketing strategies, experimenting with shoppable content, or working to integrate their digital strategies across media platforms will be in a key position as this trend accelerates.

The missing part of the AI discussion

As mentioned earlier, AI was—not surprisingly—one of the dominant themes at Shoptalk. Among the many discussions surrounding AI, personalization stood out as one of the most significant areas of focus. But I kept asking myself one question throughout the event: Do brands really understand how AI sees them?
