Why Summer Is the Best Ad Budget You’ll Never Regret

It’s 27 degrees, the schools have broken up, and half the country has abandoned its desks for a beer garden. Your customer isn’t sitting at home scrolling, they’re outside, sunburnt, slightly overexcited, and spending money like the weather might never come back (it won’t — this is Britain).

So here’s the uncomfortable question for anyone still pouring their entire budget into digital: if your customer isn’t on their phone, why is your marketing still trapped inside one?

VisitBritain is forecasting 45.5 million inbound visits to the UK in 2026, with visitors expected to spend £35.7 billion. That’s not a niche audience shuffling through a handful of postcodes, that’s a small country’s worth of people, wallets open, phones out, actively looking for somewhere to spend, eat, and be seen. Add in the usual British summer cast of school-holiday families, day-trippers, staycationers, and everyone using the sunshine as an excuse to leave the house, and you’ve got the highest footfall window of the year, arriving on a schedule you can actually plan around.

And they’re not just walking past, they’re buying. Reuters reported that quarterly sales volumes rose 0.6% in the three months to June, up 4.2% year-on-year. That’s real, measurable growth, not a rounding error dressed up as a trend.

There’s a genuine psychological mechanism behind the seasonal spend, and it’s worth understanding rather than just exploiting. Barclays’ monthly data shows consumer card spending rose 1.9% in June 2026, an uplift in May. Warmer weather is linked to a rise in serotonin, the brain’s mood-regulating chemicals which nudges people toward a “treat yourself” mindset. Longer days, more daylight, more dopamine-friendly plans: birthdays, picnics, spontaneous dinners, the first barbecue of the year that always ends up costing more than anyone budgeted for.

Your customer isn’t just out and about. They’re in a buying mood, and their routine, usually rigid, usually indoors, usually screen-first, has been blown wide open by the sunshine. That’s a gap. Someone is going to fill it. It might as well be you.

Here’s the part most brands get wrong: they see all this opportunity and respond with… nothing new. Same tone, same channels, same safe, forgettable messaging just with a sun emoji bolted on. That doesn’t work anymore, and frankly it barely worked before. Consumers are drowning in digital noise, ad fatigue is real, and attention is fragmented across a dozen platforms simultaneously. Generic messaging doesn’t just underperform,  it actively wastes budget by blending into a background nobody’s looking at.

Bold, unmissable, physical presence cuts through in a way an easily-skipped Instagram story never will. When your customer is out of the house, out of their routine, and primed to spend, that’s precisely the moment to be seen, not buried in a feed they’ve learned to scroll past on autopilot.

This is where outdoor advertising earns its keep. Billboards, transit ads, street-level placements, they don’t wait for permission to be seen. They meet your customer exactly where the summer has already put them: on the high street, at the station, outside the pub garden deciding what’s next.

That’s the real opportunity to “meet your customer where they are.” It’s not just proximity, it’s timing. Your customer is out, they’re relaxed, they’re primed by serotonin and sunshine to treat themselves, and they’re actively deciding what fills the next gap in their newly chaotic, thoroughly enjoyable summer routine. A well-placed, well-designed piece of outdoor advertising doesn’t interrupt that moment. It becomes part of it, familiar, visible, and impossible to swipe away.

Do it well, do it boldly, and you’re not just another ad. You’re the answer to “what should we do next,” sitting right there on their route home.

Summer hands you extra reasons to show up, a documented rise in spending, and a psychological tailwind most brands are ignoring in favour of the same tired digital channels everyone else is shouting into. The footfall is there. The mood is there. The money is moving.

The only question left is whether your brand is bold enough to be seen or safe enough to be forgotten.
