ANA announced on April 28, 2025, that it will be using the fuel-saving AeroSHARK riblet technology on its fleet of Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft.
Known to reduce fuel and CO2 emissions, AeroSHARK is a riblet film that was developed by Lufthansa Technik and German-based chemical producer Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF).
Since September 2024, the Japanese carrier has been operating a Boeing 777 cargo freighter equipped with the film. ANA confirmed that the AeroSHARK technology has reduced consumption and emissions by approximately 1%.
AeroSHARK is a durable bionic film that successfully mimics the skin of sharks and optimizes the airflow thus enabling significant fuel savings. According to Lufthansa Technik, the global fleet of long-haul aircraft could save close to five million tons of kerosene per year if it used the technology.
“The implementation of the AeroSHARK technology on more ANA aircraft represents our ongoing commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and improve operational efficiency,” said Kohei Tsuji, Executive Vice President, Engineering and Maintenance Center at ANA.
“This innovative technology is building a more sustainable future for ANA and the aviation industry,” Tsuji added.
ANA said it will continue to expand the AeroSHARK coating technology to other aircraft of the same type to achieve its medium- to long-term environmental goals.
