Amy Tjasink is taking us to Cape Town’s Deep South. “Kommetjie Boys”, the latest single from the Cape Town singer-songwriter and producer, starts the trip to Valley Girl, Tjasink’s new album rooted in her own personal roadmap the places and faces that have made her.
Following the success of previous singles “Feels Like Mzansi” and “Shadows of the Sun”, the project finds Tjasink looking inward towards themes of home, friendship, motherhood, and freedom. At the centre of that story is “Kommetjie Boys”, a nostalgic, feel-good ode to Tjasink’s teenage years and the legendary “Round Parties” of Kommetjie.
Produced with Theo Mulder at Tjasink’s Pretty Loud HQ studio in Westlake, the track captures the warmth and carefree energy of the coastal communities she grew up around, pairing catchy pop hooks with the kind of specifically South African storytelling that makes a song feel like home.
The music video takes that idea of home quite literally. Directed by Tjasink and Josh Adams, it was made with the intention of capturing what Kommetjie actually feels like rather than constructing a polished approximation of it.
The pair took the song into the streets and along the coastline, meeting locals as they went; a group of surfers encountered at a local surf shop joined the cast, while Arianna Carini and Siyoli Waters became part of a makeshift band performing around the village. The result is spontaneous, playful and rooted in the people who give the place its character.
Valley Girl is presented as a musical memoir, and “Kommetjie Boys” is perhaps its clearest invitation into Tjasink’s history. “It’s not just a song about a place — it’s about a way of growing up,” she says. “I hope that even if you’ve never been to the Deep South, this song makes you feel nostalgic for your own hometown.”
