Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie : Background
Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie is a 6.5% West Coast IPA from Bay Brewing Yokohama, based in Totsuka, Kanagawa. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, alongside it being part of their Uncle Rinne lineup. Inspired by chromoly enthusiasts who embrace this philosophy, classic C-type hops are used for the bittering base: Cascade, Cashmere, Centennial, with Nectaron hops being used for flavouring, with the beer taking its name from the infamous fixed wheel bikes that are now strictly regulated in Japan.

Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie poured out a honey orange colour with a vibrant fluffy white head on top that left some thick legs down the side of the glass during drinking. Though this is a West Coast IPA, the body was not as clear as traditional beers in the past, so I assume that this is a modern version of the style.
The aroma veered between the traditional style, think some musty citrus notes with a slight booziness to it, and then was interspersed with some light modern fruity tropical notes of mango and pineapple. Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie also had a light underbelly of some sweetness too as the beer warmed up, but not enough to detract away from the hops in the beer.
With the body, it began with a smooth, dry bitterness that did not linger nor outstay its welcome. The hop flavour came swiftly through it never really stepped up a gear – the light citrus flavours balancing against the tropical notes of mango and pineapple. And that was the problem with Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie – it didn’t really get going, it merely just ambled along, happily travelling without moving. There wasn’t much of a lingering flavour on the palate either, fading away to a light malt sweetness with a touch of booziness on the backend of it all.
Bay Brewing Steel Soul Fixie : The Bottom Line
A single gear metaphor of a name for the beer really lends itself nicely to the flavours and the lack of development. A shame really as there is a good base of a beer here though needs shifting up a grear.
