Review: East Brother Czech Dark Lager

Review: East Brother Czech Dark Lager

It’s been five years since we’ve checked in with Richmond, California-based East Brother Beer Co., but the release of a new Czech-style dark lager provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect.

A reddish coffee-dark in color, the beer is distinguished from German dark beers by its heavily bready character, pretzel-like with a smear of caramel sauce on top. There’s no torched coffee character, but rather the aroma and flavor of heavily toasted breadcrumbs made from Pumpernickel. At the same time a lively sweetness brightens everything up (albeit giving the finish a little too much molasses character), culminating in a finishing note of bittersweet drinking chocolate.
