Urashima Aka : Background
Urashima Aka is a 6% Irish Red IPA From Urashima Brewery based in Yokohama, Kanagawa. It’s part of their bottled and draught line-up, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. I got this bottle on my visit to the brewpub in the middle of August; however, the beer wasn’t on the bar menu at the time of my visit. Finally, it’s unknown what hops went into the making of this beer as there is no further information out about it.

Urashima Aka : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
The beer poured out a ruby red colour, with a slight brown tinge to it under the light. The head was large and fluffy, having a slightly off-white head, alongside some medium to large sized bubbles appearing in the pour. As Urashima Aka was drunk, there were some streaks down the edge of the glass, with them sticking around right until the end of drinking.
Urashima Aka smelt like your typical IPA with a bit citrus nose to it of grapefruit and lemon, alongside some more woody, piney notes as it warmed up during drinking. There was a touch of malt sweetness to the beer, alongside some creamy notes as it warmed up.
However, it’s in the body where this beer excelled as it really had a punch of smooth bitterness intermingled with some piney and citrus notes that made it a pleasant all-round beer to drink. The piney note was more of a secondary flavour in the body compared to the citrus notes, yet it was the smooth creaminess of the beer that really left an impression on me – almost like a stronger version of Kilkenny.
Urashima Aka : The Bottom Line
A souped up Kilkenny on steroids – bigger in all ways, and a really good drinking beer; one that I will definitely be having again, when I find out when it is on sale.
