Mastodon Drops “Snakes For Dinner” Video Off First Album Without Brent Hinds • Music With Depth PR
As usual, it’s a delight to wake up to a hot cup of coffee on most days, but today, especially, that cup of coffee came with a new Mastodon music video, which the band dropped this morning. This one is the second of two singles from the band’s upcoming album, “Marrow Deep,” due out Aug. 28.
“Snakes for Dinner” also features additional vocals by Josh Homme, of Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal and Them Crooked Vultures fame. It’s the first time in nearly 20 years — since “Colony of Birchmen,” from “Blood Mountain” — that Homme has contributed to the band.
The track undoubtedly benefits from his vocals, yet there’s enough from the remaining members of Mastodon to hold together a great melody and solid songwriting overall.
After 25 years, co-founder Brent Hinds announced he had left the band, with Mastodon calling it a mutual decision in March 2025. It wasn’t long before the lead guitarist himself said it wasn’t mutual, claiming he had been kicked out for embarrassing the band. The remaining members seemed to confirm as much, describing their relationship as one like a marriage that had run its course. Things got worse from there: Hinds later died from injuries sustained in a crash soon after. Despite Hinds leaving no recordings for the new album, the first single, “Your Ghost Again,” is said to be a tribute to him. Much of the conflict is addressed in the 35-minute tribute film “The Mastodon in the Room,” which shows bandmates growing frustrated with each other and reflecting on how much that comes with the job.
As for the first single, not much feels lost without Hinds here. We’ll have to hear the full album to see where it goes, but everything so far is strong. In the documentary, the remaining members of Mastodon describe the moment they started taking the craft more seriously while Hinds was still partying. It’s hard to ignore that, without him, that seriousness comes through more clearly. In his place, Nick Johnson (guitar) and touring keyboardist João Nogueira round out the band. So far, so good.
