REMST8 – COALESCENCE
It takes a special state of mind to fully appreciate long-form drone music. But there are times that you may “want to play it on repeat so you can zone out for hours”, like MKL Anderson (Drekka, and also owner of Bluesanct records) told Michael ‘Remst8’ Carlson when they talked about this project.
Coalescence plays for four hours and seven minutes, divided in eight tracks ranging from 17:58 to 54:57, but meant to be played in a continuous session. Each of these drone pieces completely defies time. It’s easy to let these immersive pieces help you to ‘zone out’ completely – the listener’s patience is fully rewarded.

Listening on headphones is advised but of course not necessary when played on a decent system.
Michael Carlson is an experimental computer musician focusing on drone ambient and field recording, ‘revolving around tracker programs since the early ’90s’. He originally composed this music in quadraphonic sound, and then re-mixed those tracks in stereo for this release. And then remixed them again in Dolby Atmos surround!
Due to the extensive length, long-form music like this is usually only released in digital format. But not Coalescence: it is also available in a cassette-shaped USB flashdrive, which not only contains the (continuous) stereo mixes, but also the individual tracks in Dolby Atmos MP4 format. On top of that there are also some extra music videos with a 5.1 surround sound. Needless to say that for this music, the surround format is a great extra sonic dimension!
