On Monday, July 13, the Durham County Board of Commissioners approved funding to begin the architectural design of Durham’s future animal shelter. While there is still a long road ahead—including design, planning, and construction—this marks the first significant step toward bringing a new shelter from vision to reality.
For many years, our community has recognized the need for a modern facility that better serves the thousands of animals who come through our doors each year. This vote represents real progress and reflects a shared commitment to improving animal welfare in Durham for generations to come.
A new shelter will provide opportunities to improve animal care; enhance the experiences of adopters, fosters, volunteers, and staff; and create spaces that better support lifesaving programs and community services. Although the building won’t be ready for several years, it’s exciting to see this important work officially begin.
We are grateful to the Commissioners, County leadership, the Sheriff’s Office, Animal Services, our Board of Directors, and the many community members who have helped advocate for this project over the years.
