In just eight days of release, the new Indonesian animated feature Jumbo has smashed the country’s previous theatrical animation records and become the highest-grossing homegrown animated film ever released in Indonesia, which is the world’s fourth-most populous country behind India, China, and the United States.
The previous animation box office record, according to Variety, was held by Si Juki The Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir (2017) with around 642K admissions. Jumbo has more than doubled that in eight days; today, Jumbo surpassed 1.33 million admissions.
Ryan Adriandhy, who co-wrote and directed the film, has been celebrating the film’s success on social media, and posted a video of filmgoers on Sunday after the film achieved one million admissions:

The film’s producer Anggia Kharisma told Variety:
These numbers aren’t just about ticket sales. They represent love, hope, and trust from the people for our own local stories. Seeing this kind of heartfelt response from Indonesian audiences makes every challenge we’ve faced over the past five years feel incredibly meaningful.
Produced by Visinema Pictures, Jumbo has been sold in nearly a dozen-and-a-half other territories, with international rollout starting in June. Countries where it is currently scheduled to screen include Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic states.
