Neil Druckmann has clarified that he has no creative involvement in the upcoming third season of HBO’s The Last of Us, while confirming that Naughty Dog also has no creative role in shaping the new episodes.
Druckmann, who created The Last of Us and previously served as a co-showrunner on the HBO adaptation, stepped away from the television series when it was renewed for a third season. Craig Mazin is continuing as the show’s sole showrunner.
In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Druckmann emphasized that his departure goes beyond simply leaving his position as co-showrunner. He said he was not involved in establishing Season 3’s creative direction and that Naughty Dog has likewise not participated in determining how the season is being made.
That means Druckmann is not in a position to comment on the production’s progress or its creative decisions.
Naughty Dog Still Controls the Game Franchise
Although Naughty Dog is not creatively involved in the upcoming season, Druckmann stressed that the studio remains responsible for The Last of Us as a game franchise.
He also hinted that the studio has multiple projects connected to the series in development, although he stopped short of revealing what they are.
Druckmann said that while Season 3 could mark the conclusion of HBO’s adaptation, Naughty Dog’s work on The Last of Us is not finished. He added that there are “a couple projects in the works” that he is excited to discuss when the time is right.
That leaves the future of the franchise in the gaming space open, even as the television adaptation approaches its conclusion.
Season 3 Will Conclude the HBO Adaptation
Druckmann also confirmed that the third season will “wrap up” the HBO series.
There had previously been uncertainty over whether the story based on The Last of Us Part II would require another season after Season 3. HBO executives had indicated that the number of remaining seasons was still being considered, but Druckmann’s latest comments suggest the upcoming season will bring the adaptation to its conclusion.
Filming began in March and is expected to continue through November.
Based on the events of The Last of Us Part II and the ending of Season 2, Season 3 is expected to shift much of its attention toward Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anderson. The series is likely to revisit portions of the story already shown from Abby’s perspective before moving forward with the narrative.
Bella Ramsey will return as Ellie, alongside Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, Isabela Merced as Dina and Young Mazino as Jesse.
Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter are also joining the cast as Yara and Lev, two important characters from the next stage of the story.
With Druckmann and Naughty Dog stepping away from the show’s creative direction, Season 3 represents a notable change in the production of HBO’s The Last of Us. At the same time, Druckmann’s comments suggest that while the television adaptation may be nearing its end, Naughty Dog has not finished exploring the franchise in games.
