SPOILER Summary/Synopsis
Bill, Becky, Damian, and Anya get awarded Stellas for their actions in the bus hijacking incident. Damian doesn’t believe he did anything special for his, though his friends disagree.
Back at the end of the busjacking incident, the police free tearful Damian from the (fake) bomb. Becky’s dad takes her home and soon, only Damian and Anya are left. Damian decides to apologize to Anya for the mean things he’d said to her in the past. Anya compliments him for offering to take the bomb for her, like a hero. When he sputters that this is the act of a friend, Anya decides to advance Plan B and invite herself to Damian’s home. He refuses, figuring she’s just trying to get close to his parents. However, he advises her that no matter what, getting close to his parents won’t happen.
Yor races to the scene, where Anya has an emotional collapse. As Yor comforts her, she tells Damian that she ran past Melinda’s car. Melinda shows up, happy to see Damian. However, at the mention of Desmond, Melinda’s mind becomes divided with half of her happy Damian is okay and half of her wishing he had died.
The next morning, Loid drives Anya to school. They talk about things, including what it means when parents pick up their kids. At Eden, Henry and Austin discuss things while the students come in. Anya is treated as a massive hero, so Becky teases him about it. However, Anya starts to exaggerate, forcing Becky to intervene. Anya loses focus, but when Damian insults her, she starts to cry. He apologizes, but the two continue to bicker as the others head to class.
Thoughts/Review
We get the wrap up of the Red Circus arc with Spy×Family 46. As usual, it was a good one.
Modifications to the Source Material
The material for Spy×Family 46 came from source manga chapters 75 and 76. As is normal, no significant changes to the source material were made, especially in the script department. The scene with Anya imagining herself dominating the world is anime-original, but her thoughts were all from the manga.
Once again, I keep getting highlighted as to how many annoying liberties the manga “localizer” takes though. I’ve no doubt that this person is proud of these rewrites, whereupon they THINK they are saying the same thing as the Japanese text, but in a different way because, “I need to rewrite things as that’s part of my job!” (It isn’t.)
One big example was when Loid takes Anya to school. While they talk, Anya asks if families who pick up their kids get along. The manga changes this to asking if those families love their kids more. Anya’s whole thought process isn’t on love, but on the dysfunction she senses, especially in the way Melinda is of two minds when it comes to her son. Anya sees that Damian’s family doesn’t get along.
Further to that is when Anya and Damian had a chat while waiting to be taken home. The manga has Damian conclude that because he barely has a relationship with his parents, there’s no reason for Anya to cozy up to him. However, in the anime (which is more accurate), he tells Anya that even if he and Anya became close, she wouldn’t be able to get closer to his parents. It may seem subtle, but the impact is much greater in the anime. Damian isn’t complaining like the localized manga version indicates. He’s advising Anya that if her plan is to get close to his parents, it won’t work. Big difference.
Double Starlight Anya
It is amusing how once again, Anya fell into the exaggeration trap in Spy×Family 46. It is lost in translation, but some of the students addressed her as “Anya-sama”. When Anya asked to be addressed as “Double Starlight Anya”, these same students still added the -sama honorific. As such, Anya lets all of this admiration go to her head. Considering her child logic, it is normal that she’d engage in this kind of activity. At the same time, it is also amusing that she got angry with Becky for trying to save her. Becky is the more mature one, thus she didn’t take Anya’s irritation to heart.
Then you’ve got Damian. I loved how Becky tweaked him and caused him to be jealous that others might steal Anya from him. If there’s one thing their bickering proves is that of all the people around Damian, Anya’s the one he probably has the most “normal” relationship with. Damian’s two friends are just sycophant toadies. Becky can speak to him normally to tweak him. However, with Anya, Damian drops all pretenses to argue with her. Gotta love it.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Spy×Family 46 provides a wrap up and partial aftermath for the events during the bus hijacking. Next up should be Austin-sensei dealing with his trauma. Maybe that’s when the anime will work in skipped chapter 68 as well.
