The Designers Behind the Interiors
Thierry Despont
French architect, artist, and designer Thierry Despont brought a deep knowledge of history to some of the world’s most distinguished residences and landmarks. Educated at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and Harvard University, he established his New York practice in 1980 and served as an associate architect for the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty. His interiors were celebrated for their architectural rigor, rich materials, and ability to make grandeur feel personal.
Stephen Bastone
Born in New York, Stephen Bastone first entered the creative world through fashion, modeling in Milan and Paris after attracting the attention of Donatella Versace and Vivienne Westwood. His 10 year apprenticeship with Vincent Fourcade grounded him in the finest traditions of 19th century craftsmanship and introduced him to figures including Diana Vreeland, Jayne Wrightsman, and Annette de la Renta. Bastone later became a longtime associate of Alberto Pinto’s Paris atelier, contributing to some of its most opulent interiors. Today, his bespoke work seamlessly unites sensual sophistication, Old World forms, and 21st century style.
MAC II
MAC II was founded in New York in 1967 by Mica Ertegun and Chessy Rayner, with the firm’s name standing for Mica and Chessy. The influential partnership designed residences around the world for prominent figures in art, fashion, and business. Their rooms combined clarity, comfort, and cosmopolitan sophistication, often placing important art and carefully selected objects within restrained settings. Both founders were inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1993.
