What do you do when people hurt you? How do you pick up your heart, keep moving forward, and allow the pain to make you a stronger, better person? How do you let the pain make you stronger instead of smaller?

As I walked away from my friend, I felt that familiar ache in my heart. Another time. Another relationship. Another situation that hurt.

Rejection. Betrayal.

I knew in my mind that we live in a broken world and immunity from that brokenness isn’t part of any life deals. But that truth didn’t stop the hurt, or the waves of self-doubt, distrust, and lies that washed over me.

When people hurt you through rejection and betrayal, healing is still possible. Lori Schumaker's free 7-day YouVersion Bible plan and companion journal, When People Hurt You: Rising Above Rejection and Betrayal, offers Scripture-based encouragement for the road ahead.

When People Hurt You, You Are Not Without a Way Through

I wish I could protect you from the hurt of rejection and betrayal. I can’t. What I can tell you is that there is a way through it where landing on the other side, feet planted and hands raised in victory, is possible.

There is a way through rejection and betrayal that doesn’t destroy you. A way that keeps your heart beating with passion and your future relationships flourishing in love. A way that propels you into your purpose, your calling, your dreams.

Why Do People Hurt the Ones They Love?

Here is a truth that took me years to fully believe: the way someone treated you is a reflection of what’s broken in them, not proof of what’s wrong with you.

Hurting people hurt people. Not because it’s an excuse (it never is), but because it’s the truth of a fallen world. Scripture doesn’t dance around this. Jeremiah 17:9 says the human heart is deceitful above all things. Every person who has ever wounded you was carrying their own unhealed places, their own fear, their own sin. That doesn’t make what they did to you okay. It does mean their brokenness was never actually about your worth.

Four Truths to Hold Onto When People Hurt You

1. Their hurt is not proof of your worth

The lie rejection and betrayal whisper is always the same: something is wrong with you. That lie is not from God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), chosen and named by a God who does not make mistakes. What someone else did to you does not get to define who you are.

2. Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling

Nobody wakes up feeling like forgiving the person who betrayed them. Forgiveness starts as a decision you make with your will, long before your emotions catch up. Ephesians 4:32 tells us to forgive just as in Christ God forgave you. That’s not a suggestion. It’s also not instant, and it’s not one and done. It’s often a choice you’ll make again tomorrow, and the day after that.

And here’s something worth knowing if you’re waiting on an apology that may never come. Your forgiveness was never dependent on their repentance. Jesus forgave the people crucifying Him while they were still doing it (Luke 23:34). Their apology, or their silence, doesn’t get to hold your healing hostage.

3. Boundaries are wisdom, not unforgiveness

This one matters, so hear me clearly. Forgiving someone does not mean pretending you weren’t hurt, and it does not mean you owe them the same access to your heart and life you gave them before. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts above all else. You can release the bitterness and still protect yourself from further harm. Those two things are not in conflict. Wisdom and forgiveness can, and should, live in the same heart at the same time.

Forgiveness is something you settle in your own heart before God. Trust is something else entirely, something rebuilt (if at all) through another person’s changed behavior over time, not something you owe them automatically the moment you forgive.

4. God sees, and God is the one who makes it right

You don’t have to carry the weight of getting even. Romans 12:17-21 is clear that vengeance belongs to God, not to you. That’s not Him asking you to pretend the wrong didn’t happen. It’s Him telling you that you can set it down, because He is both just and able to carry it far better than you can.

A Better Way for When People Hurt You

Once upon a time, I was a young woman who allowed the enemy to use rejection and betrayal to keep me stuck. I was stuck in shame because of both the hurt inflicted on me by others and the hurt I brought on myself. I believed too many lies, and those lies kept my heart in places it never needed to stay.

Then there was Jesus.

He changed everything. It’s why I write here and speak to women today. It’s the passion behind this whole ministry. Jesus loves you deeply, beyond anything you could ever imagine. He calls you His: wonderful, chosen, beloved.

He cancels out the brokenness of the world and gives us a way through the pain.

Remember who created you, O Jacob? Who shaped you, O Israel? See, you have nothing to fear. I, who made you, will take you back.  I have chosen you, named you as My own. When you face stormy seas I will be there with you with endurance and calm; you will not be engulfed in raging rivers. If it seems like you’re walking through fire with flames licking at your limbs, keep going; you won’t be burned. Because I, the Eternal One, am your God. I am the Holy One of Israel, and I will save you. I have traded in nations to win you back, Egypt, Cush, and Seba, in exchange for your freedom. Because you are special to Me and I love you, I gladly give up other peoples in exchange for you; They are trivial by comparison to your weighty significance.
