Sponsors of a November ballot measure that would require California voters to bring a driver’s license, passport or other identification papers to the polls abruptly dropped their claims Thursday that it would make voting easier, protect privacy and save the state millions of dollars.
Before a pair of court hearings, those arguments had been part of the text of Proposition 39, a state constitutional amendment backed by Assembly Member Carl DeMaio, R-San Diego, that is similar to voter-ID legislation supported by President Donald Trump.
