Lil Wayne spent the summer telling everyone he wasn’t engaged. On Monday, he introduced his fiancée on a video call meant for someone else’s engagement.
The rapper appeared in a video message posted to B.G.’s Instagram account, recorded to congratulate his fellow Hot Boys member on getting engaged to Brooke Jones. Wayne offered his congratulations, then swung the camera around to the woman standing behind his shoulder. “I’m marrying this one,” he said. “This is Madison. This is my fiancée.”
Madi Cannon, 23, waved and added her own congratulations. Wayne then claimed a spot in B.G.’s wedding party. “Let us know what color we’re wearing,” he said. “I’m the best man, you hear me?” B.G. captioned the post: “My lil Brodie gave me his blessings.” Wayne’s camp hasn’t commented further, and it is still unclear whether the two were engaged before the breakup or got there after reconciling.
That uncertainty is the story here, because the timeline was already messy. TMZ reported in May that Wayne had quietly gotten engaged to a woman in her 20s from Indiana, a report he shot down during a July 6 livestream.
“No, I’m not engaged,” he said then, adding that he had been with an amazing person but that they had split, and that he did not want to be a burden on her given the pressures of the culture today. In other words, he framed the breakup as a way of protecting Cannon from public scrutiny.
Three months later, she stands beside him on camera wearing a new title.
B.G.’s side of the story is more straightforward. He proposed to Jones onstage on September 12 during the Cash Money & No Limit Tour stop at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, and thanked Wayne for his blessing before doing it.
On the music side, Wayne is still riding the momentum of Tha Carter VI, which debuted at number one on Apple Music US with six tracks in the top 10 when it dropped in June last year. Talk of a Tha Carter VII has circulated since, though nothing has been confirmed.
For now, the only confirmed detail is the one Wayne delivered himself, mid-congratulations, without any lead-up: the woman he said he’d separated from is the one he says he’s marrying.
