An Open Letter to Christian Women

Dear Christian Woman –

In 2009, I was sitting in Bible study when another Christian mom confessed to me that she didn’t have it all together. And she wasn’t just any mom, she was the mom I wanted to be.

She was a super-fit, stay-at-home, super mom who was part of the worship team and an international missionary. I’m telling you, she was everything a good Christian should be from my standpoint, and she knew her Bible inside and out.

But she still struggled.

She struggled with being a good mom. She struggled with depression. She struggled with all kinds of things I never would have guessed by seeing her at church and Bible study every week.

Her confession lifted a huge burden from me. It was like I realized it was okay to have struggles as a Christian woman. That I didn’t have to hide my imperfections.

A few years later, I asked the woman who hosted our Bible study how she kept her house so clean. She chuckled and confessed her house was only clean on the days she hosted Bible study—and even on those days she frantically cleaned in the mornings before we showed up. Housecleaning has never been my forte, and I almost wept in relief.

It was those conversations that led to the birth of Candidly Christian in 2016.

It’s Time to Get Candid

I founded this website because I want other Christian women to know they don’t struggle alone—that being a Christian woman was about more than a to-do list and looking put-together.

That was my mission, but I knew it was bigger than me. After all, I’m just one Jesus-loving girl who doesn’t have it altogether. Add to that the fact that not all Christian women struggle with the same things. I’m a Mary, but maybe you’re a Martha. Jesus loved both women.

That’s why I sent out an email asking other Christian women authors I knew if they’d help me make it happen, and they didn’t disappoint.

It started with nine of us and a blog and has grown to include over 100 women writing about their struggles on our blog, and so many more in our anthologies, responding to emails, and sharing their personal struggles in comments.

When I first started this ministry, I dreamt of creating a safe place where women could find Jesus in the struggles of everyday life.

There are countless ministries that help women grow in their walk with God—I wanted a place we could grow closer to Jesus without the pressure to do more and try harder. Yes, you should read your Bible and pray, but it’s also good to rest at the feet of Jesus and find comfort in Him.

Despite the chaos of life, health issues, and my own struggles, this ministry continues to reach thousands of women just like you across the globe every day reminding them they aren’t alone—that you can be a Christian woman and not have it altogether.

And that’s all I ever wanted.

This Is For You

You, Christian sister, are the reason this ministry exists.

Whether you’re Suzy the homeschool mom with eight children, her best friend Tabitha who enrolled her only child in public school, or her niece, Lexi who just got engaged, the message of Candidly Christian is for you.

Whether you work 9-5, are a stay-at-home mom or a waitress working the night shift, we write for you (and for the record, I’ve been all three).

We want you to know you are not alone. You belong with us. Even if you feel like an imposter, you’re not. If Jesus has made His home in your heart, He has made a place for you in ours.

Why?

Because it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, if you are a Christian, we are your sisters.

We want you to know you are loved by Jesus even when life is hard—especially when life is hard. And it’s okay to be real. It’s okay to be honest about your struggles, because sometimes it’s the struggles that draw us closest to Jesus.

So wherever today finds you, I hope you know just how much you are loved by Jesus. It doesn’t matter if you feel like you’re crushin’ the Christian life or like you’re falling apart. God’s got this. And He’s got you, too.

Your sister in Christ,
          Heather Hart
