US–Israel War with Iran: Is Prophecy Unfolding?

The conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States in June 2025—and again in February 2026—have thrust Iran to the forefront of Bible prophecy conversations. How should we interpret these events in light of Scripture?

Is World War III About to Happen?

First, I want to address a question that is on many people’s minds today. With tensions rising between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, it feels like a fuse has been lit on a global powder keg—one that could ignite into worldwide conflict at any moment. 

Experts warn that the threat of World War III may be closer than ever. In fact, even before this latest conflict erupted, scientists had already moved the Doomsday Clock to just 85 seconds before midnight—the closest it has ever been to symbolic global catastrophe.[1]
However, the book of Revelation indicates that a major world war will not occur until after the Tribulation begins, as described in Revelation 6 (see also World War 3 in Bible Prophecy). 
Before that time, the Bible predicts several regional conflicts involving Israel, including the Psalm 83 war and the Gog-Magog invasion of Ezekiel 38–39. I believe the Gog–Magog battle must occur early in the end-time timeline to allow the seven years Ezekiel says Israel will spend burning the enemy’s weapons after the war (Ezek. 39:9–10).

Is This the Prophetic Jeremiah 49 War?

There has been growing speculation that the prophecy of Jeremiah 49:34–39 may be unfolding in light of recent U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear sites and leadership. Many are drawing parallels between current events and the biblical text.

For example, Jeremiah 49:35 speaks of Elam—an ancient region located in modern-day Iran—being struck “at the foremost place of its strength.” Some have connected this to attacks on key nuclear facilities in that region. Likewise, verse 38—“I will destroy from there the king and princes”—has been compared by some to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with dozens of senior officials.

However, we must be careful not to interpret Bible prophecy through the lens of current events, when the reverse should be true. I believe a careful look at history shows that Jeremiah 49:34–39 has already been fulfilled.

With that in mind, let us examine Jeremiah 49:34–39 in its historical context to see how this prophecy came to pass.

Jeremiah 49:34–39 in Historical Context

Jeremiah 49:35 – Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

The “bow” represents Elam’s military strength, its most prized power. Historically, Elam was militarily defeated by Assyria under Ashurbanipal (c. 640 BC) and by Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar II (c. 596–592 BC), and was later absorbed administratively into the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great (c. 539 BC).[2] The once-feared Elamite archers (Isa. 22:6) disappear from military annals shortly after Jeremiah’s prophecy, fulfilling God’s declaration to “break the bow.”[3]
Note: This prophecy is part of a larger series in Jeremiah 49 addressing the nations surrounding Israel (49:1–39), each targeting that nation’s source of pride: Ammon’s “cities,” Edom’s “wisdom,” Damascus’ “renown,” Kedar’s “tents,” and for Elam, its “bow.”[4] Because it speaks to a specific historical and cultural context, “the bow” is unlikely to refer to modern weapons such as missiles or nuclear arms.

Jeremiah 49:36 – And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

The “four winds” figuratively represent the enemy forces God used to disperse the Elamites among the nations. Following his early 6th-century BC campaigns, Nebuchadnezzar deported many Elamites, with Babylonian tablets recording their resettlement across provinces. Subsequent records show Elamites dispersed across successive empires—from as far west as Lydia to Bactria in the east (Achaemenid administrative tablets), among Jewish mercenaries in Egypt (Elephantine papyri), and in Parthian ostraca from Nisa—confirming the prophesied diaspora.[3] By the 1st century AD, Elamites were in Jerusalem at Pentecost (Acts 2:9), showing the dispersion endured into the New Covenant era.[5]

Jeremiah 49:38 – And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the Lord.

In ancient Near Eastern language, “setting a throne” symbolized asserting sovereignty over a region.[2] Here, God declares His ultimate authority over Elam by removing its native rulers. The Hebrew reads “king and princes” without “the,” emphasizing that the threat is not merely that the reigning king shall be dethroned, but that Elam shall lose its native rulers altogether.[6] Historical and archaeological evidence, including contemporary kudurru fragments, confirms that Elamite royal power collapsed at that time, and the kingdom never regained independence.[3]

Jeremiah 49:39 – But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the Lord.

The promise that God will “bring again the captivity of Elam” in the “latter days” points to the Messianic era. This restoration is understood spiritually: people from Elam would be freed from the captivity of sin and brought into God’s kingdom. The presence of Elamites among those who heard the gospel at Pentecost (Acts 2:9) provides early evidence that this promised restoration had begun. Remarkably, despite intense persecution, Iran today is widely reported to have one of the fastest-growing churches in the world[7]—a reminder that God is still gathering people to Himself in the very region once known as Elam.
One final clarification: While Elam’s heartland overlaps with part of modern Iran, the two are not identical. Iran is a much larger, multi-ethnic state encompassing the territories of many ancient peoples—Persians, Medes, Parthians, and others who appear separately in biblical prophecy. Modern Iranians are primarily Persian in cultural and historical identity, not Elamite.[8] The book of Ezekiel itself treats them as distinct: the prophet refers to Elam in chapter 32 and later to Persia in chapter 38 within different prophetic contexts (Ezek. 32:24; cf. 38:5). Therefore, applying a prophecy concerning Elam to the entire modern nation of Iran goes beyond what Jeremiah’s prophecy actually states.

How Should We View Current Events?

Rather than seeing today’s events as the direct fulfillment of prophecy, it may be wiser to view them as developments that could be setting the stage for future prophetic events—particularly through the weakening of Iran.

A weakened Iran could:

  • Help contribute to the temporary period of peace that precedes the Ezekiel 38–39 war (Ezek. 38:8, 11).
  • Push Iran to rely more heavily on Russia, aligning with Ezekiel 38:5, where Persia (Iran) appears among the allies of Magog, whom many identify with Russia.
At the same time, Iran’s retaliatory strikes across Arab states in the Gulf and the wider region may also be helping create the conditions for the conflict described in Psalm 83, which many see as a precursor to Ezekiel 38–39. These attacks have pushed normally divided Arab nations—including several listed in Psalm 83:6–8—to unite in opposition to Iran.[9] 

Iran’s actions may be indirectly encouraging the kind of Arab cooperation that could eventually allow the coalition described in Psalm 83 to form.

This growing unity among Arab states against Iran, combined with Iran’s possible weakening, may also help explain why Persia is not mentioned among the nations in Psalm 83, yet later appears as part of the coalition in Ezekiel 38.

A Convergence of Signs

Regardless of how the current conflict ultimately unfolds, it appears to be converging with numerous other developments that many see as prophetically significant:

  • President Trump’s announcement that government files on UFOs and extraterrestrial life will soon be released,[10] coming the same year Spielberg’s Disclosure Day is set to hit theaters[11]—suggesting an intensification of deception as we approach the Rapture (2 Thess. 2:9–11; see also Aliens and the End Times Deception).
  • Rapid advances in artificial intelligence, with tools like Sora flooding social media with AI-generated videos and images so realistic many cannot distinguish truth from fiction[12]—a technology that could become a powerful instrument of mass deception in the coming Beast system (Rev. 13).
  • A historic U.S.-brokered peace plan unlike any before it, backed by multinational enforcement—the kind of agreement that could potentially evolve into the covenant Daniel 9:27 says the future Antichrist will confirm.[13]
  • The global push toward digital identity—from the UK’s proposed mandatory work ID[14] to Apple’s new Digital ID[15]—suggesting that the system described in Revelation 13:16–17, which restricts buying and selling, may be far closer than many realize.

And these are only a few examples among many.

Taken together, these developments paint a sobering picture: the world appears to be moving rapidly toward the very conditions the Bible describes as existing just before the final chapter of human history unfolds.

We have never been closer to the Rapture, the Tribulation, and the glorious return of Jesus Christ.

The real question is: Are you ready for Jesus to come?

If He returned today, would He be your Blessed Hope (Titus 2:11–14)…

or your Holy Terror (Revelation 6:12–17)?

We are living in biblical times.

And the King is coming soon.
