My review and thoughts on Sadie and the Surprising Sea Creatures!
This is a fun picture book which allows kids to have creative input too. Sadie is relaxing on the beach when her brother bugs her to come look at some rock pools with him. Sadie agrees and the two head to the rock pools, but when Sadie sees one particular rock pool there’s something strange around the edges of it. This paperback is filled with thick glossy pages of some fun and colourful illustrations and text, and also a selection of stickers at the back.
The story begins by showing us Sadie as she relaxes on the beach with her pet for company, she then ends up going on an exciting and wacky adventure underwater meeting strange sea creatures and encountering some very silly things. This book is different to other picture books as kids can add stickers to help make the book creatively unique. For example the first page shows Sadie relaxing ‘with her WORD STICKER for company ‘. The word sticker area is supposed to be replaced by a word sticker you can find at the back of the book and in this case there are three choices: twin hamsters, pet goldfish, new dog. There’s a picture sticker to accompany the word sticker which is stuck onto the page making the picture on this unique to a child’s choice and this happens throughout the book.
Every double page has another word and picture to choose, usually from around three different choices and I like how this makes the story in the book unique to every child. The illustrations in the book are really good. I love the way everyone looks and how fun each scene is. Every page is colourful with lots of details to spot too, and with the added stickers it can make for some very fun and silly pictures and story. The story ends well and the back of the book has a page where you can stick your remaining left over stickers to create a picture or new story. I don’t think this page is enough for all the left over stickers as about two-thirds of them won’t be used, but it’s a fun extra.
Overall a fun book which gives kids the chance to partly make up the story themselves. A fun book which after using the stickers can also be read again and again.
