Liongsate is bringing the original Ghost in the Shell film back to Canadian theatres this month. The 1995 loose adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga series of the same name recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and will be showcased in cinemas in 4K for the first time. Current Liongsate subsidiary Manga Entertainment co-financed the film and originally gave it a limited theatrical release in 1996 before its eventual continued presence on home video. In 2023, Iconic Releasing screened the film theatrically in the United States as part of their AX Cinema Nights program. GKIDS re-released the film’s sequel, Innocence, theatrically across both Canada and the U.S. in 2024.
Ghost in the Shell was directed by Mamoru Oshii from a screenplay by Kazunori Itō. Kenji Kawai composed the score.
2029: A female cybernetic government agent, Major Motoko Kusanagi, and the Internal Bureau of Investigations are hot on the trail of “The Puppet Master,” a mysterious and threatening computer virus capable of infiltrating human hosts. Together with her fellow agents from Section 9, Kusanagi embarks on a high-tech race against time to capture the omnipresent entity. Director Mamoru Oshii’s award-winning cyber-tech thriller, based on the comic book by Masamune Shirow, has established itself as one of the leading Japanese animation films of all time.
