Amazon MGM Studios Expands Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 Plans
Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 plans are finally moving ahead, and Amazon MGM Studios is expanding the effort. The project has now moved into scriptwriting after the team finished early story outlines, a sign the studio wants real momentum, not just more fan hype.
According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios is also developing an animated Warhammer 40,000 event series with Blur Studios and Games Workshop. The new series is built as a spin-off from Secret Level and will focus on the Deathwatch, an elite group of veteran Space Marines who hunt alien threats. Dave Wilson, who directed the well-received Warhammer 40,000 Secret Level episode, “And They Shall Know No Fear,” is set to serve as co-creator and director, while John Orloff is writing the script and Cavill is executive producing.
Cavill’s role across both the live-action and animated projects is meant to keep the franchise consistent and faithful to the source material. He’s still attached to the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series as star and executive producer, but he’s now also helping guide the animated side of the universe as an executive producer.
Wilson said Secret Level was never meant to be a one-off. He said the response to the Warhammer 40,000 episode was “extraordinary” and helped push Amazon to greenlight a larger spin-off. “Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories. The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right,” Wilson said.
Orloff brings war-drama experience from projects like Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air, while Deadpool creator Tim Miller is executive producing with Wilson for Blur Studios. Cavill and Natalie Viscuso are also executive producing, along with Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Andy Smillie from Games Workshop.
The Secret Level Warhammer 40,000 episode drew strong praise from critics and fans for its CGI, its brutal action, and its close match to the franchise’s grim tone. That reaction appears to have helped clear the path for the new Deathwatch series, which is being developed alongside the live-action Warhammer 40,000 show. Neither project has a set release date yet, but both are moving forward, with the first entries likely to land in 2027 or 2028.
