Review

The First Unicorn: Miracle on Wonder Island by Kathleen J. Shields is a heartwarming novel that uplifts the soul. It shares a powerful message of kindness, hope, faith, forgiveness, and selfless love even in the most difficult of times.

When a white colt with a red mane is born, the horses of Wonder Island think something is different about him and look at him with skepticism. His mother proclaimed he was special. As he grows up, Aden stands out. Instead of keeping his head down and sticking to his herd, he has a knack for venturing out and helping anyone in need, even if they are of another species. His penchant for mingling with other animals does not sit well with the other horses in his herd. When an angel bestows him with a holy gift because of his faithful heart, Aden’s life takes a turn. Shunned from his beloved herd, he goes into the forest. However, he does not let this prevent him from helping others.

What gift does Aden get? How does it change his life and the lives of the other inhabitants of Wonder Island? Will Aden ever be accepted back in his herd and reunite with his mother?

Kathleen J. Shields’ The First Unicorn: Miracle on Wonder Island is a tale that ignites hope and inspires us to be unconditionally kind. It is an allegorical story based on the life of Jesus. Aden represents Jesus Christ. Aden’s feats remind us of Jesus’ miracles. It is a great book to introduce biblical stories to children. Through Aden, little ones can easily understand Christ’s unconditional love for us. The illustrations make the book all the more attractive for children.

The First Unicorn: Miracle on Wonder Island explores a number of themes. Faith is beautifully depicted in this novel. Different animals believe in different higher beings. While wolves believe in the Moon Weaver, the elephants believe in The Great Listener, the raccoons, owls, and nocturnal creatures believe in the Great Light Bringer, while the ducks believe in the Great Nest Keeper. Similarly, the rabbits have faith in the Forest Fairies, the hummingbirds in the Bloom Giver. The birds call out to the Season Weaver, whereas the bees dance for the Nectar Bringer. Aden shows us that all of them are connected to one all-loving Divine Presence, who is always with us. His depiction of God is powerful.

The power of forgiveness is masterfully showcased in this novel. One act of kindness and another act of fear leave a deep mark on a young wolf cub. When she grows up, she again comes face-to-face with Aden and his herd. She does something that any one of us would deem unforgivable. However, Aden shows us otherwise. He not only forgives her but also makes the herd and us understand the reason behind her actions. Apart from Aden, there is one other character who left an impact on me. It is his friend, Buck. Buck’s journey from fear and  hatred to helpfulness is wonderfully shown. I will always remember him.

Kathleen J. Shields masterfully weaves in tidbits from the other books in this novel. I can’t wait to get my hands on The First Unibear. I am super-excited for the upcoming books in this series as well. At the end of the book, Shields provides us with thoughtful discussion questions and lesson guides. I also appreciate the section, Parallels to Jesus’ Life. I love how biblical verses are included here to make the message stronger.

The First Unicorn: Miracle on Wonder Island by Kathleen J. Shields is indeed a masterpiece. Though it is meant for children and young adults, I highly recommend it to adults as well. It has life-changing lessons that will definitely make us better human beings.
