It’s perfect in Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Banana Ice Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothies. And Protein Pancakes topped with sliced bananas and a drizzle of melted peanut butter? Yes, please!
So why not take that yummy combination and turn it into banana and peanut butter overnight oats?
Are peanut butter and bananas good for overnight oats?
Absolutely! Creamy, nutty peanut butter, plus extra sweetness from ripe bananas, adds to hearty oats for a simple, satisfying breakfast.
WHY MAKE PEANUT BUTTER OATS OVERNIGHT
I love all sorts of flavors of Overnight Oats, but I keep coming back to peanut butter banana oats.
- Quick and easy to mix up! Just 5 minutes of prep and you’ve got breakfast all week long.
- Easy to make vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free. Just switch out the milk and yogurt for your favorite dairy-free versions and make sure you use certified gluten-free oats if needed.
- A great combination of protein and healthy fats. Plus plenty of fiber!
- And this peanut butter and banana overnight oats recipe is just the start! Use this base recipe for all sorts of yummy variations – see below for ideas.
PEANUT BUTTER OVERNIGHT OATS RECIPE INGREDIENTS
I use a few specific ingredients here to boost the protein in the pb overnight oats (plus I’ve included ideas for more protein boosters below!).
- Oats. This is the main ingredient in overnight oatmeal recipes! Rolled oats or quick oats are best.
- Greek Yogurt. I use vanilla Oikos. Homemade Greek Yogurt is another great option – if your yogurt is plain, you can add a splash of vanilla extract for that vanilla flavor.
- Unsweetened Almond Milk. You can use any variety of milk. I like almond milk, but dairy milk, coconut milk, or even oat milk works great, too!
- Peanut Butter. Use natural peanut butter, which should just include peanuts, salt, and oil.
- Protein Powder. I like Legion protein powder, which you can find on Amazon. Collagen is another great protein booster.
- Bananas. The riper your bananas are, the more sweetness they’ll add to the overnight oats and peanut butter.
HOW TO MAKE OVERNIGHT OATS WITH PEANUT BUTTER AND BANANA
Step 1. In glass mason jars or 16oz containers (I use reusable deli containers), combine the oats, yogurt, milk, peanut butter, and protein powder. Stir with a spoon to mix well. (You can use a mixing bowl or glass measuring cup if you prefer.)
Step 2. Add bananas, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
Step 3. Serve in the morning, cold or warmed up.
OVERNIGHT OATS PEANUT BUTTER AND BANANA TIPS
When choosing oats for overnight oats, I typically pick old-fashioned oats or rolled oats, although quick-cooking oats can work too if that’s what you have on hand. Steel-cut oats may not soften enough without cooking, and instant oatmeal will turn into mush.
Bananas can oxidize, or turn brown, when they’re exposed to the air. They’re still fine to eat, but not as pretty to look at, so use an airtight container or stir the bananas into the oatmeal mixture before refrigerating to avoid them turning overly brown. You could covery tightly with plastic wrap or simply add the banana slices in the morning before serving.
PB overnight oats get thicker the longer they sit, so stir well before serving, and add a bit of extra milk or yogurt if they are thicker than you want.
Breakfast prep for the week! Peanut butter overnight oats are good for up to 5 days in the refrigerator making this a perfect make-ahead breakfast!

PB OVERNIGHT OATS PROTEIN BOOSTERS
When you make pb overnight oats, you’ll use milk and oats as the base (both of which also contain protein), but your options are endless from there! This peanut butter overnight oats recipe already uses a couple of protein-packed ingredients:
- Protein Powder. Mixing your favorite protein powder into your overnight oats makes for a delicious high-protein breakfast. You’ll typically get 15-30 grams per serving, depending on the brand.
- Greek Yogurt. Using Greek yogurt as part of the liquid-to-oats ratio adds 3 grams of protein.
- Nut Butter. A Tablespoon of peanut butter adds 4 grams of protein, and almond butter will add nearly as much at 3.4 grams. Powdered peanut butter also mixes well with oatmeal, with less fat.
To make high protein peanut butter overnight oats, you can also add any of these:
- Collagen. 1 Tablespoon of collagen in each jar of oats will give you an extra 6 grams of protein. This is my favorite brand.
- Nuts. Add chopped nuts to your overnight oats and peanut butter. 2 Tablespoons of chopped almonds will give you 4g of protein, and the same amount of chopped walnuts or pecans will add another 2 grams.
- Chia Seeds. Adding chia seeds is a great way to add an extra punch of nutrients, with 2g of protein per serving. They also help give a delicious pudding-like texture to your overnight oats. Try this Overnight Chia and Oats Recipe if you’re a fan of chia!
- More Seeds. Hemp seeds (3g per Tablespoon) or flax seeds (1.3g for a Tablespoon of ground flaxseed) are also options for adding protein and nutty flavor to your oats overnight.
OVERNIGHT OATS AND PEANUT BUTTER FAQS
Is peanut butter good in overnight oats?
Yes! You get a thick, creamy texture plus nutty flavor. Paired with banana, you get a lightly sweetened, delicious breakfast.
Does mixing peanut butter with oats add protein?
While peanut butter does add a bit of protein to the oats, peanut butter gets more of its calories from fat. It’s still a great option to add to your breakfast, but you’ll want to include another source of protein.
Can you eat peanut butter overnight oats hot?
I typically enjoy them right out of the fridge, but you can pour them into a bowl and microwave them for 45-60 seconds. Add more liquid if the mixture seems too dry.
