Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers have been around since 2002, but this Wichita, Kansas chain is one to watch. I love that they hail from where White Castle opened its doors in 1921.
Discovering Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers
My family and I were driving around Orlando, Florida, when we came across a brightly lit burger restaurant (the location is now a 4 Rivers Smokehouse) calling us to visit. Once inside, my first thought was that Freddy’s was very reminiscent of Steak n Shake. My next thought was, it’s time for Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers review.

Double Cheeseburger: A Perfect Specimen

Onto the double cheeseburger, just WOW! I was blown away. It is a perfect specimen of a cheeseburger.
I loved it so much that my wife Marcela and I returned just for double cheeseburgers the following day. The smashed patties are thin, so you’ll need a double to get that great griddled steak taste.

Patty Melt: A Flavorful Twist

The patty melt comes with Swiss cheese and grilled onions on toasted rye bread. For some odd reason, I think American cheese would have worked better in this case, but it was still a damn fine patty melt. Maybe a double next time?
Chicken Sandwich

While the chicken sandwich from Freddy’s wasn’t an original menu item, I have seen it on the drive-thru during subsequent visits. The hand-breaded chicken breast is available in a spicy and grilled version. I finally pulled the trigger at their Naples location, and it was freakin’ delicious. It might be a little too much pickle for the common man, aka, me.
Chili Cheese Dog: A Messy Delight
I see a chili cheese dog (Vienna brand) on the menu, which means I am required by my Beast Oath to order it. A double cheeseburger, patty melt, and an order of fries somehow find a way onto my order too. I wash them all down with some vanilla frozen custard.
I liked the chili cheese dog, but wished the chili was a little better. The wiener is lightly resting on the buttered bun which guarantees you will have a mess on your hands. If that’s your thing, well, then guess what? Load up on napkins.

Sides and Sauces

Crispy Fries: Perfect for Dipping

The fries are thin and crispy, making them perfect for smashing into their Freddy’s Fry Sauce. The most important part of the fries is the highly addictive Freddy’s Fry Sauce. It’s one of those ketchup and mayo combos, so it goes great with everything.
Freddy’s Famous Fry Sauce: Addictive and Versatile

I was raving about it so much my pops bought me a bottle to take home.

Dessert Experience
Vanilla Frozen Custard: A Creamy Classic

Marcela calls me bland for always ordering vanilla wherever we go, but I think it’s the base flavor. If the vanilla is excellent, then everything else should be too. And yes, the vanilla frozen custard at Freddie’s is fantastic.
Final Take on Freddy’s
If you see Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers on the horizon, make sure you drop in for a double cheeseburger. But if you’re in a hurry, don’t worry—there’s a drive-thru. One last thing: get extra Fry Sauce.
